After visiting Kumano Kodo Shrine and enjoying the stunning view from Usui Pass Lookout, I tried the famous Chikara Mochi from the Nakasendo Trail.
Curious about what Chikara Mochi is, I found out that during the Edo period, the lord of Annaka Domain had his samurai run from the gate of Annaka Castle to Kumano Kodo Shrine at Usui Pass along the Nakasendo Trail for training. This foot race, known as "Ansei En-soku" (similar to a marathon today), was rewarded with Chikara Mochi.
At the Usui Pass tea house, Misuzuya, I enjoyed the sweet "Niko Niko Chikara Mochi" and the savory "Shiawase Chikara Mochi" (‾¬‾*) so delicious!
Now, about the taste...
The entire place is surrounded by fragrant Japanese cedar, and while bees occasionally buzz in, the ventilation is excellent.
In addition to Chikara Mochi, soba noodles are also a specialty.
They serve snacks similar to Kosen Senbei.
The Black Label beer is delicious.
Served with grated daikon, seaweed soy sauce, sweet red bean paste, walnuts, sesame, and kinako (roasted soybean flour).
Freshly made mochi is truly delightful.
It was an incredibly tasty local specialty.
