Heading from Nagano, you’ll find an old Chinese restaurant around the intersection leading to Nakakaruizawa. I've been curious about it but never entered. After following my friend’s car for lunch, we pulled in. The green roof and the green sign "Ryugu" felt quite surreal, and I couldn’t help but think, "Shouldn’t that be orange or red!" It’s needless to say, I pointed that out to myself in silence. Upon entering, it was hard to tell if I was welcomed or not, but I gathered myself and took a seat at the table. Apparently, they don’t have lunch specials. I chose the chicken noodle soup from the menu, referring to it as "Chī Sū Tānmen," but the lady at the counter replied, "So, chicken ramen, right?" While she was correct, the name didn’t fully capture it.
Shortly after, the bowl arrived. Contrary to my expectations, the broth was a thick, cloudy white with chicken, onions, spinach, and shiitake mushrooms floating on top. The soup was extremely hot, yet surprisingly delicious. The flavor from the chicken was enhanced by the umami of the shiitake, creating a strong, rich taste. The noodles, which were thin and had a somewhat straight texture without too much elasticity, complemented the soup beautifully. Their rough texture and thickness meant they effortlessly carried the flavorful broth. However, I did feel the onion was unnecessary, though certainly better than bean sprouts.
I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was!
