On a weekday lunch in early August,
I visited right at 11 AM when the restaurant opened,
as I imagined Karuizawa would be crowded in August.
However, until I left around 12 PM, there were only about three groups of customers, and seats were available.
I had heard that lunch options like the tempura rice bowl for JPY 1400 and set meals for JPY 1800 were reasonably priced,
but I was drawn to the limited lunch offer for five groups,
so I ordered the lunch short course for JPY 3190.
The four staff members I saw were all estimated to be over 60 years old,
which gave the place a higher age demographic.
It seemed that many were inexperienced,
and operations were guided by a strict yet nostalgic chef.
The tempura was served promptly over the counter,
and it took about 40 minutes until the dessert was served.
For those seated at tables, the tempura was served on a plate,
but I recommend the counter seats where you can have the tempura placed right in front of you as it’s cooked.
The contents of the lunch short course were as follows:
- 2 shrimp
- pumpkin
- large green beans
- hase (a type of fish)
- squid wrapped in shiso
- eggplant
- choice of shrimp kakiage tempura rice bowl or kakiage & rice
- miso soup
- pickles
- dessert fruit
I was aware of this tempura restaurant,
but I had mistakenly thought it would be pricier and have a more formal atmosphere.
However, my impression changed to one of casualness and affordability.
I think it’s quite rare to find tempura in Tokyo for under JPY 1000,
so I plan to challenge myself to try the service tempura rice bowl next time.
It was a great meal.
