Despite visiting Karuizawa with my colleague just before the spring equinox, the morning temperature dropped to minus 7 degrees. We decided to make the best of it by reserving a lunch course at the Manpei Hotel.
Upon checking in and stating my name, I was pleasantly surprised to be led to a table with a view of the courtyard, perfect for birdwatching. The dining area features exclusively table seating, accommodating groups from three to six. True to the reputation of Manpei Hotel, a place steeped in history and tradition, the tables, chairs, and tableware all exhibit a certain elegance, complemented by the waitstaff who convey a noteworthy dignity in their service!
To start, I ordered a glass of 15-year Les Amoureux (white wine) for ¥1300. The lunch course costs ¥4100, offering a choice of meat or fish for the main dish, while the appetizers, soup, bread, dessert, and café or tea are fixed components of the meal. I opted for the fish.
The appetizer of the day was a carpaccio featuring Shinshu salmon (a hybrid of rainbow and brown trout), along with arkshell and whelk.
The soup was a pea puree based on potatoes.
For the main course, I had poele Sea Bream.
Dessert consisted of chocolate mousse cake accompanied by orange sorbet.
Overall, the flavors were tailored to suit Japanese tastes, offering a universally appealing menu. Although the bread was a soft variant rather than a baguette, it was still quite flavorful.
Even though the cuisine is fundamentally French, it was evident that the menu has evolved over its long history to cater to Japanese preferences—an enjoyable lunch experience indeed.
