ゆったりと過ごす休日 : Manpei Hotel Main Dining Room

I walked to Karuizawa Station in the morning to work up a bit of a sweat, took a shower, and then enjoyed breakfast.
I chose Western-style cuisine. We were three people, each with different egg preparations and side dishes.

It may be ordinary, but Manpei has the power to make it feel special.

Sunlight streams through the trees onto the terrace seating, making for a wonderfully pleasant breakfast. A solo diner by the window is deeply engrossed in a paperback.

I reflect on how I ought to take time like this more often... and I decide to spend the rest of my time doing nothing until checkout.

The time spent in a classic hotel is truly blissful and a form of detoxification for me—it's hard to put into words.

Since this is a special occasion, I wanted to stay in Room 128 of the Alps Building, where my eternal idol stayed for quite some time from 1976.

I enjoyed a glass of Chablis and the Manpei original wine. For someone like me, who can only describe the food as incredibly delicious once it exceeds a certain standard, the dinner experience in the main dining room was nothing short of remarkable. Staying in my long-desired Room 128, savoring exquisite wine while relishing the unique atmosphere of the classic hotel, made the course meal exceptional. My family truly enjoyed it, and we couldn’t find any faults.

From the photogenic exterior of the hotel, the traditional approach, the warm hospitality of the staff, to the tastefully understated classic room, Karuizawa woodwork furnishings, clawfoot bathtub, a materials room that brings historical figures back to life, captivating stained glass, and the serene courtyard—every step I take adds to my excitement and emotional experience.

The main purpose of the visit was to celebrate my mother’s 88th birthday with the whole family. While my mother has traveled to many places, Karuizawa had somehow been overlooked, so this trip was in response to her request from a few years ago. However, I ended up being the most excited one during this trip.

I definitely want to return. Since coming back, I’ve been thinking about it constantly—this is what you call a “Manpei loss.”
