Senjujuku Coffee Monogatari

About a 7-minute walk from Kitasenju Station. Senjuku Coffee Monogatari is a retro cafe that still keeps an old fashioned feel.

The interior has the warmth of wood and a calm atmosphere filled with the aroma of house roasted coffee. It has counter and table seating, so you can spend your time at a relaxed pace.

In addition to the blended coffee Monogatari Blend, the shop also offers arranged menu items such as "Vienna Coffee."

The photo shows "Indian Monsoon," which is said to have a rich bitterness and a distinctive aroma.

This is a shortcake you’ll want to enjoy with coffee. It is said to be a well-balanced dessert, with mellow cream and the tartness of strawberries.

The cakes are offered on a daily rotation, and once they sell out, that’s it for the day, so visiting early is recommended.

I spent a relaxing afternoon on my day off chatting at an easy pace. The interior has the feel of a retro kissaten (Japanese coffee shop), and the sofas were comfortable, making it a nice place to unwind. I’d like to visit again when I’m in the area.

The retro interior had a calm atmosphere, and the mugs visible from the counter were lovely. I ordered coffee and nori (seaweed) cheese toast. When the coffee arrived in a lovely mug, I got so excited! It tasted great too. I’d like to come back again.

Coffee Workshop Shanti

About a 5-minute walk from the west exit of Kitasenju Station. Coffee Workshop Shanti is a retro cafe tucked into one corner of the shopping street.

There are counter and table seats, and at the counter you can enjoy watching the coffee being brewed right in front of you.

The coffee is roasted in house, and the owner carefully handles everything from roasting the beans.

They use a siphon brewing method and carefully brew each cup one by one using steam pressure. The photo shows Higashi Timoru (East Timor), known for its gentle acidity and citrus aroma.

This cafe is popular for its homemade cakes, which go well with coffee and tea. They offer different cakes each day, including pound cake and chiffon cake made with seasonal fruit.

The photo shows their milk chiffon cake, known for its moist and airy texture.

毎食幸子

The retro interior, with a sense of history, left a strong impression, and it was a place where we could enjoy a calm atmosphere. This time, we had toast and cake. The toast was made with a thick slice of shokupan (Japanese milk bread), and it was served fresh from the oven. The pepper on top of the cheese added a nice spicy accent, and while simple, it was very tasty.

Cafe Kanmido

About a 5-minute walk from the west exit of Kitasenju Station. Cafe Kanmido is a retro cafe set in a renovated kominka (traditional Japanese house).

The bright interior blends Japanese and Western styles, with table seating and tatami zashiki (traditional floor seating) areas.

The limited-time "Ichigo to Anko no Daifuku-fu Wa Parfait" is a layered Japanese-style parfait made with plenty of strawberries.

It has a nice balance of sweetness and tartness, making it a seasonal treat. In addition to ordering it A la carte, there is also a drink set that lets you pair it with your favorite drink.

The "Hiyashi Coffee Jelly Anmitsu with Homemade Matcha Cookie" is a colorful sweet topped with plenty of fruit.

Instead of the kanten (agar jelly) usually used in regular anmitsu, this dessert uses coffee jelly, which is one of its key features. It also comes with anko (sweet red bean paste) and shiratama (glutinous rice dumplings), making it a satisfying dish.

SARM710

The atmosphere inside has a retro feel, making it a calm and relaxing space. What I had there was curry. It was neither too sweet nor too spicy, and the roux really brought out the full flavor of the vegetables, which made it very good.

While strolling through Senjujuku on the old Nikko Kaido, I came across a lovely kominka (traditional Japanese house) cafe. After a short wait, I was shown to the tatami seating on the second floor. The tables were full, which shows how popular this cafe is. I had the cake set. Every cake had a great balance of flavor and presentation, and they were all very good.

Milk Hall Moka

About a 6-minute drive from Kita-Senju Station, Miruku Horu Moka is a retro kissaten (Japanese-style coffee shop) that brings to mind the good old days.

Inside, the nostalgic atmosphere and rows of sofa seats create a spacious setting where you can relax and take your time.

The classic item at retro cafes, Pancake. It is a simple dish best enjoyed with plenty of butter and sweet syrup.

It also goes well with coffee, making it a perfect sweet for tea time.

The "Napolitan" is a rich ketchup-based pasta dish made with bacon, green peppers, onion, and mushrooms.

They carefully prepare it from the step of cutting the ingredients after the order comes in. The noodles have a nice texture, and the sweetness of the vegetables and the umami of the ketchup are said to be well balanced.

グルメライドが好きな人

It gives the impression of a long-established neighborhood kissaten (Japanese-style coffee shop). The master brewed the coffee starting from grinding the beans, and the space had a slow, relaxing flow of time. At first, I was only planning to have coffee, but the zenzai (sweet red bean soup) at the next table looked so good that I ended up ordering one too.

For the Napolitan, hearing the quick chopping of vegetables after ordering made it exciting. The noodles were chewy, and for some reason this was amazingly good too. It was simple, but it was the best Napolitan of my life. It was moving enough to leave a real impression.

Kissa Kura

About a 5-minute walk from Kitasenju Station. Kissa Kura is a retro cafe set inside a renovated kura (traditional storehouse).

The cafe offers counter and table seating. The solid feel unique to a kura and its nostalgic atmosphere fill the space, making it a relaxing place to spend time.

The shop’s specialty is the four leaf clover Pancake said to bring good luck. They use a mold and hand cook each one individually.

The color can come out a little differently depending on who grills it and how the heat is adjusted, and that one of a kind look is part of the charm.

This is the limited-quantity coffee gyunyu (coffee milk). It is served by pouring milk over ice made from coffee, then drinking it as the ice slowly melts.

As the flavor gradually changes over time, it is said to be a cup you can enjoy all the way to the last sip without getting tired of it.

夜会三銃士

I visited with a friend for tea after lunch. They run the cafe in what used to be an old kura (storehouse). The space had high ceilings and felt retro and open.

After checking Tabelog beforehand, I got interested in the Pancake and ordered the set with iced coffee (JPY1,320). The Pancake came in a clover shape and had a pretty generous portion. The café had a retro feel too, and the space was calm and relaxing.

Sumibi Sen Coffee Rikyu

Sumibi Sen Coffee Rikyu is a retro cafe about a 5-minute walk from Kita-Senju Station.

The interior is done in a unified European antique style, with mostly table seating and some counter seats as well.

The "house-made cheesecake" is a rare-style cake made with cream cheese and sour cream.

It is a popular item with a pleasantly springy texture and the rich good taste of cheese.

This is yokan (sweet bean jelly) and jelly, served as an otoshi (small appetizer), which is unusual for a cafe.

The jelly changes daily, and on this day it was peach jelly. Though it is a small item, some people visit looking forward to it.

morie55

A style with an otoshi (small appetizer), which I experienced for the first time at a kissaten (Japanese coffee shop)! Today it was mango jelly and mizuyokan (sweet bean jelly). They seemed to be homemade, with a gentle flavor that was really good! The café au lait cup & saucer and spoon are so lovely! This is a retro coffee shop with a sense of history, and even the cups are different for each drink, making it fun to enjoy with your eyes too.

ツナ缶のナカミ

I had cheesecake and fresh lemon squash. The shop had a really nice atmosphere, and I had a great time. At the start, they served yokan (sweet bean jelly) and amanatsu jelly as a kind of otoshi (small appetizer). I thought that was unusual, and the jelly was especially good.

KiKi Kitasenju

About a 6-minute walk from Kita-Senju Station. "KiKi Kita-Senju" is a Japanese tea cafe in a kominka (traditional Japanese house) that was self-renovated.

The interior has a gentle atmosphere that helps you relax. There are counter seats, table seats, and zashiki (tatami seating), creating a calm and peaceful setting.

Gyokuro sencha (sencha blended with gyokuro) is a tea made by blending crisp sencha with gyokuro.

Because they brew it for each order, you can enjoy its freshly brewed aroma and flavor. It has a nicely balanced richness and a pleasant astringency, and is said to leave your mouth feeling refreshed.

The "KiKi Rare Terrine" is a rich and smooth dessert with a melt-in-your-mouth texture like nama-choco (fresh chocolate).

It is also carefully paired with Japanese tea, and comes with homemade whole wheat biscuits with a touch of salt. The photo shows the "Matcha Rare Terrine," made generously with Special selected matcha.

A Japanese tea cafe renovated from a 90-year-old kominka (traditional Japanese house). I was able to take my time enjoying fragrant nihoncha (Japanese tea) and Japanese sweets in the calm space. Their original blended nihoncha, monaka (wafer cake with sweet filling), warabi mochi (bracken starch dumpling), and parfaits are popular, and one of the main draws is being able to relax at a slow pace in the quiet atmosphere.

まさき│グルメに目覚めた人

With its calm Japanese atmosphere, this is a space where you can enjoy tea in peace. The hojicha terrine (roasted green tea terrine) I ordered had a rich, toasty hojicha aroma and a smooth melt-in-your-mouth texture. It had a refined taste. The hot gyokuro sencha (high-grade shaded green tea) served with it spread with mellow umami and a gentle sweetness, and it paired perfectly with the dessert.

The interior, lined with brown-toned furnishings, has a calm and charming feel. It offers table seating and sofa seating, so you can relax and take your time.

A classic item at retro cafes, the "banana shake."

This satisfying drink has a rich milky taste while still letting you feel the banana pulp. It is slightly thick, and you can enjoy it almost like a dessert.

The "Mix Sandwich" is a simple sandwich filled with cucumber, ham, and tomato.

It has a lightly mustardy flavor, and the balance of fresh vegetables and bread is said to be very good. It is also a great choice for a light lunch or snack.

美魔女グルメ

This is Maiwei, right in front of Kitasenju Station, and it has been in business for 45 years. It is a very retro and lovely kissaten (Japanese-style coffee shop). I ordered the pilaf and a coffee float. The pilaf had a simple, nostalgic taste. The coffee float was great, and the ice cream was so good.

Inside, table seating and sofa seating are available, so it is easy to stop by whether you are alone or with a group.

The signature "soufflé pancakes" are a tempting dish with a soft, airy texture that only freshly made pancakes can offer.

They are served in a simple style with whipped butter and your choice of syrup. You can order a single with one pancake or a double with two, and the photo shows the double size.

The coffee here is made with beans carefully selected from around the world by coffee specialists, and each cup is also crafted with great care in the roasting.

平尾日吉

I had Breakfast at Hoshino Coffee Kitasenju Ten. The calm interior stays quiet even in the morning, with a relaxed atmosphere throughout. The classic set of thick cut toast and a boiled egg was a great match with the fragrant hand-dripped coffee. I could really taste the flavor of the beans, and it made the morning feel a little luxurious.
