[Gifu Prefecture: Gifu City and Kakamigahara City] Stylish cafes
Photograph:sak121786
This coffee shop near Nijikken Station in Kakamigahara, Gifu Prefecture, is popular for its coffee and Mont Blanc chestnut dessert.
It uses a historic building relocated from an old villa, where guests can enjoy a relaxed and elegant time. Some also say the stylish retro kominka (traditional Japanese house) adds to its charm.
You can enjoy coffee brewed with high quality beans grown at high altitude.
You can choose from three different blends based on altitude, from the dark roast at 1-gome to the light roast at 3-gome. The middle option, 2-gome, is said to be a medium roast coffee with a gentle, smooth taste that pairs well with food.

Along with the coffee, you will definitely want to try the mont blanc as well. They offer three kinds, including seasonal mont blanc.
One is the “Sanmyaku Mont Blanc,” made with waguri (Japanese chestnuts) from Gifu Prefecture and matcha baked sweets. It is said to have a smooth melt-in-your-mouth texture, with the natural sweetness of the chestnuts and a gently crumbly texture you can really taste.
しらす天
I picked two out of the three kinds of Mont Blanc. Since the flavors are completely different, I recommend trying and comparing them! The exterior and interior of the shop were stylish too. They also had seasonal drinks, which made me want to come back every season.

・Mountain Range Mont Blanc
An elegant Mont Blanc made with baked sweets of Gifu-grown waguri (Japanese chestnuts) and matcha. At the top sits a glossy candied chestnut in its skin, giving it a look that calls to mind a mountain peak❗️When you put in your fork, the rich aroma of tightly piped waguri and fresh cream gently spreads out❗️So good❗️

Their freshly baked Homemade waffles are popular, and they offer more than 20 kinds, including menus made with seasonal fruit and vegetables. People say the batter is light and fluffy.
The batter, made with plenty of eggs, is cooked after you order, so you can enjoy the kind of great taste only Homemade waffles can offer.

I ordered a waffle and tea set. I ate the waffle with butter and honey. The waffle was served piping hot and tasted great, and it went perfectly with the tea. The cafe is spacious, so it doesn’t feel cramped, and even when it’s busy, it’s nice that you can still relax and enjoy your tea.

I had baked apple waffles and Ruhuna tea. I do not usually drink much tea, but the menu here gave careful explanations of the teas, so I felt comfortable ordering one. The waffles had a rich cinnamon aroma, and they went perfectly with the ice cream.

One reason for the many reviews saying it brings great Manzoku is the Breakfast set, which is served for the price of a drink only.
It comes with a wide assortment including bread, pasta, and chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard), and some say it gives them a boost from the morning. It is perfect for anyone looking for a good value Breakfast.

A shop near Gifu Station that is famous for Breakfast. The Breakfast set that comes with just the price of a drink is quite substantial, with a good balance of bread, salad, and more, making it highly satisfying. The interior has a calm atmosphere, and one of its charms is that you can relax there from the morning. You can also use it as a bar at lunch or dinner, but Breakfast is still the top recommendation. This is a local favorite where you can get a real sense of Gifu.

They seem to have a wide selection of sandwiches and toast sets, making this a great spot for a casual lunch or a light meal when you're hungry.
Their most popular item, the "tamago sando set (egg sandwich set)," is said to feature a simple but well-balanced sandwich as the star. The bread is fluffy and the portion is very filling.
Photograph:90ddf5
The kakigori (shaved ice) menu, available all year round, is also popular. In addition to fruit flavors, it seems they use a wide range of ingredients such as milk tea and kuro-goma (black sesame).
The “yakiimo milk brulee” has a nice toasted aroma and a slightly bitter edge, and it seems to really bring out the flavor of roasted sweet potato.
ちゃこかん
I chose the fresh strawberry kakigori (shaved ice) I had been looking forward to, and it was very good, with very fluffy ice topped with strawberry syrup that tasted sweet and tart. I also had the shogayaki sandwich, and the sharp kick of ginger and the nice richness of the sauce were a great match, making it very tasty.

The menu is extensive, but the tamago sando (egg sandwich) is so good that I end up ordering the same thing every time. They also had Omurice and pasta. The kakigori (shaved ice) also comes in many varieties. The menu changes with the seasons. Everything I tried was delicious.

A Breakfast set is available, and it seems many people stop by looking for breakfast.
For the main, you can choose either toast or a muffin. The thick cut toast gets high marks for its just right level of toasting and nice crisp texture. For an extra charge, you can also add ogura-an (sweet red bean paste).
Photograph:yu0511ji
They also seem to have a wide selection of sweets that look just right to go with a lunch dessert or a drink.
The "Jikasei Purin (house-made pudding)" is said to have a firm, springy texture, with a rich egg flavor you can really taste. It is popular for its smooth and rich taste.

I had the Teppan-yaki Napolitan. The salad was also good, and the omelet underneath the Teppan-yaki Napolitan was soft and fluffy. Of course, the Napolitan was delicious too. The interior was stylish, and the staff were pleasant.

I visited for Breakfast. Since it is tucked just off the main street, you would not notice it unless you knew it was there! The building already looks stylish from the outside, and the inside is more spacious than I expected! I came for the muffin breakfast set. There were also lots of drink options. The blueberry muffin I chose was packed with blueberries and was really good. I could relax, and the atmosphere was nice.

They offer a wide drink menu centered on coffee and tea. Their popular Tomoriya Hiyashi Kohi (Tomoriya Iced Coffee) is made with ice cubes made from coffee.
You pour piping hot coffee over the ice to enjoy it, and even as it melts, the flavor does not get watered down, so you can enjoy its rich full body to the last sip.
Photograph:70nao7o
Their house-made chiffon cake seems to come in seasonal limited-time varieties in addition to the standard flavors.
The moist and airy chiffon cake is made with komeko (rice flour), so it is also recommended for people who are mindful of gluten. The "Plain Chiffon Cake" apparently comes with several topping options, including chocolate.

I ordered the “Tomoriya Cold Coffee.” I thought it would be a regular iced coffee, but I was surprised when it arrived. They pour hot, rich coffee over coffee ice cubes served in a masu (wooden sake cup). The coffee is very rich and very good. At lunchtime, they offer stylish set meals and soup sets that look great too.
Many of the dishes are healthy and packed with vegetables, which sounds great for people who are health conscious. It seems you can also add focaccia with a nicely balanced salty taste to the soup set.

They also have a full lineup of drinks and house-made sweets, so many people stop by during cafe time.
One item that gets lots of good reviews is the cheesecake, which uses different ingredients depending on the time, such as kinako (roasted soybean flour) and lemon. You can also enjoy fruit along with the rich, moist cake.

This cafe is popular for its hearty set meal menu made with jinenjo (Japanese wild yam).
Set in a traditional house with a thatched roof, it offers a stay that feels like stepping back into old Japan. It also has irori (sunken hearth) seating and terrace seats with views of the countryside.

The “tororo-meshi (grated yam rice) set meal” is a hearty set that comes with the main tororo, barley rice, and lots of small side dishes.
The tororo is said to be very sticky, with a rich, clear flavor. It seems you can choose from three portion sizes for both the rice and tororo.
If you prefer noodles over rice, the tororo soba (buckwheat noodles topped with grated yam) comes recommended. It is served with tororo on top of the soba.
The tororo, rich with dashi flavor, is said to coat the soba well and has been well received. It also seems to come with a side of extra dashi that you can add whenever you like.

A kominka (traditional old house) standing in the nature of Gifu, where you can eat jinenjo (Japanese wild yam) tororo. The interior also has an old-fashioned feel. I finally got to try the jinenjo I had been hoping for. It had amazing stickiness, was thick and rich, and the seasoning was also great◎ It was perfect poured over rice and mixed with yakumi (condiments)〜☺︎I was happy because you do not get to eat jinenjo Nakanaka. The side dishes that came with the set meal were also very delicious.

・Tororo-meshi (grated yam over rice) set meal
It has a smooth mouthfeel with a pleasantly springy texture, and the dashi and soy sauce seasoning makes it really easy to keep eating with rice. The aroma of kizami nori (shredded seaweed) is also really nice. Add green onion, wasabi, or a soft-boiled egg to your liking, and you can enjoy a range of different flavors. The miso soup and small side dishes also taste great too, with miso-topped oden and what seemed to be a glass noodle salad.

This is a cafe where you can mainly enjoy two kinds of spaghetti served on a Teppan-yaki plate. It is about a 7-minute walk from JR Tajimi Station.
This well-known local spot is said to have a charming retro, nostalgic feel inside. It is also known for the staff's efficient work and friendly service.
One of the spaghetti menu items, “Italian Spa,” uses a sauce that has been passed down from the first generation to the present.
The pasta, well coated in a rich ketchup-based sauce, is said to pair perfectly with the egg spread over the Teppan-yaki plate. Its appetite-boosting look is part of the appeal too.

Another spaghetti dish, “meat spa,” is said to be made with a slightly sweet meat sauce with ground meat and onions added.
In addition to A la carte spaghetti menu items, you can also order them as a set with a drink or salad.

I wonder if the meat sauce is seasoned with onions and ketchup, because it has a slightly sweet flavor that feels nostalgic, like something I ate as a child. That said, it mixes really well with the soft spaghetti heated on the Teppan-yaki plate, making it an exquisite dish.

This coffee shop, founded in 1975, is located in the old townscape of Takayama, Gifu Prefecture. It is about a 12-minute walk from JR Takayama Station.
The classic and calm interior is decorated with cute, warm touches, making it a relaxing place to spend time.
They offer a wide range of drinks, including house-roasted coffee made from beans sourced from trusted farms, as well as tea and juice.
Reviews say the "Cha-puccino (matcha cappuccino-style drink)," made with high-quality matcha (green tea powder) in a cappuccino style, is also popular. You can choose it hot or cold. Its slightly sweet and pleasantly bitter taste makes it the kind of drink you keep coming back to.
