Shinohara Coffee Shop

Shinohara Kohi Ten is a cafe founded in 1971, a 13-minute walk from Hanabatake Station, quietly standing along the Ikemachigawa River with a striking brick exterior. You can enjoy the fragrant aroma of house-roasted coffee and seasonal cakes sourced from local sweets shops.

Inside, there is a relaxing space with counter and table seating.

The coffee is carefully brewed using a siphon method. They finish it by adding a small amount of hot water to balance the flavor.

The "Shinohara Blend Coffee" stands out for its rich aroma from a unique blend. It is served in the siphon itself, which is another nice touch since you can enjoy a full two cups.

They also offer a full range of light meal options that pair perfectly with coffee. The Most Popular "hot sandwich" is a plate with bacon, egg, and cucumber.

By baking it in the oven, it comes out crisp and fragrant on the outside, while staying juicy inside.

よいおすし

The yaki kare (baked curry) was topped with cheese and egg, and it was a rich, delicious curry. The iced coffee had a clean taste and was very good. The restaurant had a retro feel, and many customers were chatting or reading the newspaper, which made it a relaxing space where I could really take my time and feel comfortable.

While out touring, I stopped by a calm coffee shop with a retro Showa-era feel for Breakfast. I had the hot sandwich set, which was listed on the menu as a recommendation. The slightly sweet Japanese rolled omelet and the crisp cucumber were a perfect match. The atmosphere of the shop was also calm and very nice. It is easy to drop in even by yourself.

Luz Cafe

Rusu Cafe is a cafe located about a 5-minute walk from Nishitetsu Kurume Station, along Showa-dori Street. The lush plants covering the restaurant make it easy to spot.

Inside, a retro space opens up, filled with old-style furniture and home appliances. There are table seats and sofa seats, making it a good choice when you want to relax alone or in a small group.

Everything on the menu is homemade with real care. The especially popular kare raisu (curry rice) is a dish of mildly spicy, spice-forward roux served with plenty of grilled vegetables.

As you keep eating, the savory flavor of the ground meat and the sweetness of the vegetables build together, letting you enjoy its rich, deep taste.

The popular “cake set,” which lets you enjoy a drink and sweets together, is also well received. The details are posted on the blackboard inside the shop, so you can look forward to whatever lineup is available at the time.

The classic tart uses plenty of seasonal fruit. The sweet crust and refreshing fruit are said to pair perfectly with coffee.

おいしいの見つけ隊

I had yaki karee (baked curry) before, but this time I ordered the pear tart and a latte. The latte had a gentle flavor, and the tart was probably homemade and very good. The little decorations on display are thoughtfully chosen, and the restroom is clean too.

Borontei

Borontei is a retro cafe located a 12-minute walk from Kushiwara Station, along the street by Kurume Police Station. With a history of more than 50 years, the interior is a nostalgic space that brings to mind the French countryside.

The Western antique-style interior stands out. There are counter seats and table seating available.

The drink menu is extensive, with coffee, tea, juice, floats, and more. The "wiener coffee" in the photo is a cup where the slight bitterness of the coffee spreads together with the richness of fresh cream.

The colorful sprinkles on top add a cute accent.

At cafe time, the drink and cake set is also popular. A classic choice is the moist "cheesecake."

The rich flavor of cream cheese gets a fresh accent from lemon. The elegant and stylish plates and cutlery are part of the appeal too.

There were lots of coffee cups and saucers lined up, which added to the nice atmosphere. I ordered coffee, apple pie, and cheesecake, and everything was delicious. The atmosphere was great, the food was great, and if this place were in my neighborhood, I’d want to become a regular too!

タビ夫

・American Blend
As it is an American coffee, it is milder and has more acidity than the blended coffee, but it is just as easy to drink and tasty. The cups and spoons were cute, and many of them were lined up behind the counter as well. There were also magazines and newspapers, and the atmosphere was relaxed and calm. The owner was clear and brisk in the way he spoke, but also very kind and wonderful.

Bandjiro

Bandiro is a retro cafe located a 9-minute walk from Nishitetsu Kurume Station, just down a side street off Meiji-dori. Founded in 1949, it is run by the first owner's grandson.

The interior is lined with furnishings that reflect the passage of time. There are counter and table seats, and the space is said to be comfortable even for solo visitors.

Along with coffee and tea, the cafe menu also offers a full selection of items such as cake. The standard choice is the “Banjiro Hoshiki Sosaku Blend Coffee (Banjiro-style original blend coffee),” a cup that recreates the flavor from when the shop first opened.

It has a mild bitterness and is easy to drink, and it is also recommended to enjoy it with whipped cream. The original cup design is impressive as well.

Reviews also say one of the charms is that the sweets lineup includes seasonal limited-time items, so you can enjoy something different each time you visit. The "Ichigo no Omoide" in the photo is a dish made with plenty of large, sweet strawberries.

It has three layers of ichigo (strawberry), yogurt, and ice cream, and is said to have a refreshing taste.

The sweets menu item called Ichigo no Omoide is said to have three layers of strawberry, yogurt, and ice cream (or four layers if you count the whipped cream?), and the balanced sweetness of the whipped cream and ice cream goes well with the sweet-tart flavor of the strawberries and yogurt, making it quite tasty. The coffee has little bitterness and is easy to drink.

Then the hayashi rice (hashed beef rice) arrived. Like a meal menu item at a kissaten (Japanese coffee shop), the portion was on the modest side. The sauce was smooth and a bit rich, with an authentic taste that showed it had been simmered well. There was not a huge amount of meat and other ingredients, but they mixed well with the rice and worked nicely together. It was the kind of hayashi rice you would call a classic kissaten staple.
