Kanagawa Prefecture [Yokohama City]: Restaurants Where You Can Enjoy Udon
Photograph:06hide
Udon Miyatake Yokohama Landmark Tower Ten is a restaurant with two sides: authentic Sanuki-style udon shipped directly from Kagawa in the daytime, and an izakaya (Japanese pub) with a wide range of dishes at night.
Inside, the restaurant has a somewhat nostalgic atmosphere from the 1970s and 1980s, making it a relaxing place to spend time. It is easy to drop in whether you are on your own or with a group.

The "gyuniku kare nanban (beef curry nanban)" is said to stand out for its thick soup. The soup, rich with Japanese style dashi broth, clings well to the firm udon noodles, so it stays tasty to the last bite.
There are two kinds of kare nanban (curry nanban), one with beef and one with chicken tempura, so you can choose based on your mood that day.

The signature sudachi gyoza (dumplings made with sudachi citrus) is a popular item that many people order together with udon.
With a focus on Homemade preparation, the filling made with chicken and oba (perilla leaf) is said to be carefully wrapped one by one. Dipping them in a sauce made with sudachi juice and pepper really brings out the savory flavor, making them especially tasty.

There are two types of curry nanban (curry noodle soup): beef and chicken tempura. This time, I ordered the beef. The broth is thicker than the curry nanban you usually get at a soba restaurant. Actually, maybe it is closer to curry roux than soup!? The Japanese style dashi really comes through, and it tastes great. The udon also has a nice texture and goes down smoothly.

I had the meat udon and the house specialty! Sudachi gyoza (citrus dumplings). The udon had a solid portion and nice chew, which was quite good. The sudachi gyoza were dumplings with chicken and oba (perilla leaf), and they were very light and delicious!

Shuko Ogi Bashamichi Shinshiyakushomae Ten is a popular restaurant where you can enjoy authentic udon in the daytime and creative Japanese cuisine at night.
The walls inside feature different textured woods arranged in a checkered pattern, creating a Japanese modern feel.
There are counter seats, table seats, and Private room seating, making it a great place when you want to enjoy your meal at a relaxed pace.
The kamo seiro udon (cold udon with duck dipping broth) is popular for its flavorful dashi broth.
The chewy udon pairs well with the dipping broth, which is packed with duck meat. The more you chew, the more the rich flavor unique to duck spreads through each bite.
Photograph:ゼン☆サク
"Spicy Miso Pork Belly Vegetable Udon" is a bowl made with the restaurant's original miso.
The soup layers the rich flavor of mildly spicy miso with the savory taste of pork and the sweetness of vegetables, creating a well-balanced taste. The heat builds as you keep eating, and it is said to be so good you will not be able to stop.

There were too many dishes I wanted to try, but I went with the toriten seiro (cold noodles with chicken tempura) and mini kakiage Rice bowl! The toriten had been dipped in kaeshi (?) and was covered in a sweet and salty sauce, which was a whole new experience!! It was really good in its own way! The dipping sauce for the udon, with the added yuzu fragrance, made for an amazing bowl! I finished by drinking every last drop lol

It gets crowded at lunchtime, but the turnover is fast. The interior is clean, and the seating is spacious. The udon in the Tsukemen is just really good. The recommended dish is duck udon, but if you are really hungry, the chicken tempura udon is filling and highly recommended! If you add the rice set, it is so filling that you will not need dinner!

Shizenya is an izakaya (Japanese pub) where you can enjoy a wide variety of dishes, and at lunch they serve stone-milled soba noodles and thin-cut udon noodles.
The interior has the warmth of wood and offers a relaxing space. In addition to counter and table seating, there are also Semi-private room options, making it easy to visit whether you are alone or with a group.
"Curry Nanban Udon" is a popular menu item that you can enjoy either as A la carte or as part of a set.
The smooth, firm thin noodles catch the spicy broth well, and it is said to be so easy to eat that you can finish it in no time. If you add the mini pork cutlet Rice bowl topped with a thick cutlet as a set, it makes for a very filling meal.

The "Premium tenzaru (cold soba with tempura)" comes in a style where the soba dipping sauce and tempura sauce are served separately.
The soba is chilled well in cold water, giving it a refreshing, smooth texture when you eat it. The tempura, including shrimp, white fish, and oba (perilla leaf) coated in a light batter, is said to be crisp and fragrant, letting you enjoy the natural flavors of the ingredients.

・Cold natto (fermented soybeans) udon
I used to eat chilled natto udon a lot, and it still tastes great! In fact, it tastes really great! In summer, this is the one to go for. Shizenya was absolutely the right choice.

• Shrimp Tempura Soba (Large size)
The pay first system is unusual for a seated place. The shrimp tempura was crispy, the soba was tasty, and most of all, service moves fast, so even when it is crowded, you probably will not have to wait that long. It is good value, so it is a nice option when you are in a hurry.

"Maruten Kake Udon" is a bowl topped with maruten (round fried fish cake) with green onion.
The clear broth is said to have a gentle yet deep flavor. The maruten lets you enjoy the rich umami of fish, the sweetness of green onion, and a crisp texture. You can choose the noodle portion size from small, medium, or large.

The “Bukkake (Cold)” is topped with shiso (perilla), grated daikon radish, and neri-ume (plum paste).
The udon has a nice firm chew and goes down smoothly. The refined dashi broth brings out the good flavor of the udon.

• Niku-kake (hot)
It looks like you can choose the noodle portion at no extra charge, so I went with the large 400g size. The broth had a light salty taste that somehow brought nikujaga (Japanese meat and potato stew) to mind, and it was so good I finished it in no time.

・Maruten (fried fish cake) kake udon
The udon is very firm and thick. It will make your jaw tired. Lol The broth also stands up well to those strong noodles! The salt is a bit on the strong side, but you can also taste a sweet and slightly tangy note. The noodles and broth go really well together, and it was very delicious.

"Wagyu Strip loin and Goku Noko Tamago (extra rich egg) Yaki-Shabu Udon" is a luxurious dish topped with Wagyu Strip loin.
They recommend first eating the meat and udon as is with the egg yolk mixed in, then pouring on the broth and eating it next. If you squeeze the lemon over it, you can also enjoy a change in flavor.

・Kamaage udon with rich egg and fermented butter & tempura (chicken tempura and chikuwa tempura)
The udon was not especially firm and chewy, but had a soft, mochi-like texture with a nice bite, and it was very good! More than anything, the chicken tempura was really delicious.. The batter was super crisp, and the chicken inside was tender and juicy, so I was really glad I ordered it!!

It was very filling and satisfying!! The pairing of the udon noodles with their new kind of texture and the super crispy tempura was excellent!! I’d love to come back again!! Next time, I want to try a different kind of udon too.

At this restaurant, you can enjoy house-made udon made with a focus on no additives in an elegant Kyoto-style dashi broth.
The popular "niku udon (beef udon)" is topped with beef carefully simmered in shiro-dashi (light-colored dashi) and additive-free seasonings. Add the yuzu kosho (yuzu pepper paste) served on the side, and you can enjoy a fresh spicy kick that changes the flavor.

This "Fukurokuju Gozen set" is a lavish meal that comes with a negitoro shirasu Rice bowl, three kinds of tempura, udon (small meat udon), and small side dishes. Other popular choices include Gozen set menus that come with yakitori and tempura Rice bowl.

I chose the Happy Gozen set, and the udon went down smoothly while the tempura was crisp and very tasty! The portion was fairly filling too, so it left me about 80% full, which was just right since I could still snack while walking around Kamakura afterwards.

The negitoro (minced tuna and green onion) with udon and tempura set was great, and the negitoro was fresh and tasty. Also, I first thought the tempura included squid, but it actually had two pieces of fried mochi (rice cake)‼️The tempura itself was super crispy and insanely good.

Yamashita Honki Udon Kawasaki Ginryugai is a chain with locations across Kanagawa Prefecture and other parts of Japan. It is a place where you can casually enjoy creative udon and tempura.
The interior has a stylish atmosphere like a cafe. While it mainly has counter seating, the seats are spaced out comfortably, making it easy to use.

The "Shiroi Mentai Cheese Cream Udon" is one of the creative udon menu items.
When you mix in the pure white cream covering the bowl, it coats the noodles well, letting you enjoy rich mentai (spicy cod roe) cheese cream udon. You can also pour over the separately served dashi (broth) to change up the flavor.
Photograph:곰0113
"Tori-ten (chicken tempura) tartar bukkake udon" is another popular menu item with many repeat customers.
The udon has a chewy texture and comes topped with tori-ten coated in a crisp batter. The tartar sauce pairs well with the richly flavored broth, making it a light and refreshing dish.

• Kake udon + raw egg
First, the broth. It is a Kansai-style broth with a nice iriko (dried sardine) dashi flavor. The saltiness may be on the lighter side. The udon has a good chew and a springy texture. It came with sesame seeds, so I ground them and added them in, which made it even better. The egg had a rich yolk and tasted great. I thought it was a very high-quality egg.

すみれ輝
The other day, I happened to see tori-ten (chicken tempura) on TV, and it looked so good that I had been curious about it, so when I found "tori-ten bukkake udon" at just the right time, I ordered it with a raw egg topping! It comes in a style where you grind the sesame seeds yourself. The broth was also so tasty that even I, who usually do not drink it, ended up drinking it.

The “Kawasaki Special” is a deluxe menu item topped with kakiage (mixed vegetable tempura fritter), a raw egg, green onion, wakame (seaweed), and meat. Tempura bits are self-serve and all you can add.
It is said to have a great balance between the refined flavored broth and the smooth, easy-to-slurp udon. The same menu item can also be ordered with soba.

Not only the udon but also the soba is said to be very good.
The photo shows the "tempura soba," topped with shrimp and vegetable tempura. The freshly fried crisp texture pairs with the light flavor of the dashi broth and the aroma of the soba, making it easy to see why people rave about it.

・Tsukimi udon
The udon had just the right chew, and it went down nice and smooth. I slipped down the raw egg at the end and finished it all. It was very good from start to finish〜

・Chilled kakiage soba (cold soba noodles topped with a mixed vegetable tempura fritter)
Soba topped with one big kakiage. The ingredients in the kakiage are onion, carrot, beni shoga (pickled red ginger), and naga-negi (long green onion). The onion is cut into big chunks, so it feels nice and hearty. I think the value for money is excellent.
