Miyazaki Prefecture [Miyazaki City] Popular spots where you can enjoy onigiri (rice balls)

Nikumaki Honpo Ichibangai Ten

Nikuma Honpo Ichibangai Ten is a specialty shop where you can casually get Takeout nikumaki onigiri (rice balls wrapped in meat), a popular local Miyazaki gourmet item.

There is no eat-in space inside, and it has a stand-style setup that makes it easy to stop by and buy something. Since it stays open late into the night, many people also stop in to pick some up as a last bite after drinks or as a souvenir.

The most popular item is "Ganso Nikumaki Onigiri (original meat-wrapped rice ball) with sauce"!

It is said to be a rice ball made with rice from Miyazaki Prefecture, wrapped in pork infused with a sweet and savory sauce. The moment you open the wrapper, the fragrant aroma of soy sauce spreads out, and it is said to be so good that you finish it in no time.

This is the "Cheese Nikumaki," topped with cheese.

The salty taste and richness of the cheese go well with the sweet and savory sauce, and it is said to be so good that you will get hooked. They also offer a wide lineup including unusual and limited time items such as "Taretaru Nikumaki" and "Nikumaki Deluxe Ume."

・Nikuyaki onigiri (meat wrapped rice ball)
It looked small and I thought it might not be much, but one bite in, I found it packed tight with firm rice, so it was actually quite filling! Combined with thinly sliced pork seasoned well with a secret soy sauce based tare sauce, it was incredibly tasty!! Halfway through, I poured on the special sauce that came with it, and the sweet savory flavor, a bit like yakiniku sauce, made it an even better match!

Since I had come all the way to Miyazaki (Miyazaki Prefecture), I decided to buy some local food. When I tried it, the meaty flavor spread nicely through my mouth, and it went really well with rice, which made it very tasty. It was a dish that made me want to eat it again the next time I come to Miyazaki.

Miyazakiya

Miyazakiya, located inside Miyazaki Station, is a new stand style shop that opened in September 2024.

Since it opens from 7:30 early in the morning, people say it is very convenient when you want to grab a quick meal for breakfast or while waiting for a train.

The onigiri made with Hinohikari rice are small and easy to eat.

Along with standard fillings like salmon and takana (pickled mustard greens), the menu also includes fillings such as "abura miso (oil miso)" and "yukari takuan (red shiso seasoning and pickled daikon)," and many people seem to buy a set with two onigiri of their choice and Kara-age.

"Gori Kara-age" and "Gori Nanban" are popular side dishes that many people buy together with onigiri (rice balls).

The Kara-age, seasoned first with garlic soy sauce, is fried up crisp and fragrant, and with one bite, its juicy flavor fills your mouth.

These onigiri (rice balls) look tiny and cute, but they have a solid flavor. Even the simple shio onigiri (salted rice ball) had a light salty taste, as you’d expect, and it was really good. It reminded me of the onigiri my mom used to make for school trips a long time ago. I had a drink with these onigiri as a snack to go with it. They are perfect as a drinking snack too.

めんたいこパスタ

It was a small size, but they used good rice, and since I was a little hungry, it was just right. By the evening, they only had three kinds left, so I ordered mentaiko (spicy cod roe). I’d like to try onigiri (rice balls) with other fillings too.

I somehow still wasn't satisfied after eating sushi, so I went to a drink-friendly onigiri (rice ball) shop. They had about 8 kinds of onigiri, along with a good range of snack-type dishes, and plenty of drinks too, making it a pretty nice place. They also had karamen (spicy noodles) as a finishing dish, so I think it would be a good spot for the last stop around your third bar. The onigiri were good.

Although this restaurant has only recently opened, customers keep coming in one after another. I had the ran-o shoyu-zuke (soy sauce marinated egg yolk) and mentaiko (spicy cod roe) onigiri (rice balls). The ran-o shoyu-zuke was delicious.

Since I had the day off today, I came for a drive and stopped by the hot springs at Sukimurando. I saw a sign saying the rice was good, so I got curious and went in. The rice balls were shaped nice and lightly, with a variety of fillings, and they were quite filling. The rice had a nice sweetness and tasted great.

These are pretty big musubi (rice balls), and they look so good(*^◯^*)These large musubi made with locally grown rice really make me glad to be Japanese. The oba shio musubi (perilla leaf salted rice ball) lets you enjoy the rice ball itself, and the Wagyu shigure is just what you would expect from Miyazaki beef. It feels luxurious♪

Niko Niko Shop

Nikoniko Shop in Nichinan, Miyazaki Prefecture, is an onigiri (rice ball) shop known for its tenmusu (rice ball with tempura shrimp) and tobi-ten (flying fish tempura).

The display case inside is lined with tenmusu and deli dishes, making it easy to stop by casually. The eat-in space has counter seats, so you can also enjoy a quick light meal.

The "Omusubi Set" is a popular menu item that comes with the shop's specialty tenmusu (tempura rice ball), onigiri (rice ball), and tobi-ten (flying fish tempura).

They make it after you order, so the tenmusu comes out nice and warm, and the tobi-ten is served piping hot and freshly made. Many customers choose Takeout, so it seems easy to relax and enjoy your meal if you eat in.

The "onigiri (rice balls)" come in options like gyoza-filled, ribbon-shaped musubi, and shiso hijiki, and they are said to be a good size and very satisfying to eat.

A favorite among repeat customers is the "shake mayo kombu kelp." It is generously filled with a mayonnaise-mixed blend of salmon and sasame kombu kelp, and is said to stay tasty to the very last bite.

What I got was the Mix Combo (ebi tenmusubi (shrimp tempura rice balls) x3, tori tenmusubi (chicken tempura rice balls) x2) and an ika-flavored fish paste cake in the style of satsuma-age (deep-fried fish cake). Both were even better than I expected, and the tenmusu in particular had a perfect balance of the fragrant tempura and the sweetness of the rice!

まんじゅうどろぼう

This is the kind of omusubi (rice ball) that comes with a good amount of salt on it. The sake mayo kombu kelp combo is not made with salmon flakes, but with shredded salmon, mayo, and the kind of kombu kelp often used in onigiri, all mixed together! It seems to be a local specialty, and even though it was my first time trying this combination, it was really good! I want to try making this at home too!
