[Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture] Places with Great Kakigori (shaved ice)
Photograph:砂浜ノート
Kyo Hyoka Tsurara is a kakigori (shaved ice) specialty shop in Nakagyo Ward.
The bright and calm interior has a modern Japanese feel. Since you can enjoy good kakigori here year-round, many people come from outside Kyoto Prefecture as well. There can be a line, so reservations are recommended.
The fluffy kakigori (shaved ice) comes in both seasonal limited editions and year round menu items, with creative kakigori made to match the season.
Depending on the flavor, it is topped with espuma, nuts, crunch, and more, so you can enjoy the texture too. The photo shows the year round menu item "Strawberry Milk."

"Mont Blanc Cassis," generously topped with Mont Blanc cream, is an autumn menu item.
It is topped with shibukawani (sweet simmered chestnuts in their skins), and inside the shaved ice are filled with marron cream and cassis sauce, making it almost like a cake.

・Goru Kyara Passion
I had missed the timing for Goru Kyara Passion even though it had been on the menu several times. It was an amazingly delicious kakigori (shaved ice) that did not disappoint! It also reminded me how good the gorgonzola cream is!

I had the pumpkin shaved ice. The rich, smooth sweetness of the pumpkin filled my mouth, giving it a luxurious taste almost like a dessert. It paired perfectly with the icy cold shaved ice, and the finish was clean and refreshing. It was a naturally sweet and soothing bowl that left me fully Manzoku.

Seasonal flavors like sakura-mochi (sweet rice cake with cherry leaf) and fresh Pione grapes with cream cheese are especially popular.

Shaved ice you can enjoy like a cocktail is another thing that makes this place unique!
The menu seems to change with the seasons, with items like “cassis orange” and “sencha gin lime (green tea gin lime) ~ with ao-sansho (Japanese green pepper) ~.” The “lemon sour” in the photo is said to let you enjoy the aroma of alcohol and a refreshing lemon finish.

This kakigori (shaved ice) dessert had the roasted aroma of black sesame gently spreading with each bite, paired with chewy warabi-mochi (bracken starch dumpling), making it feel like a little reward that brought more happiness bite after bite. The rich black sesame sauce poured over the top had an elegant depth, and together with the ice's soft melt-in-your-mouth texture, it was so good it made you feel completely relaxed. This is kakigori packed with the charm of Japanese flavors.

・Very Very White
When you put a spoon into the round mound of whipped cream (?), you find fluffy shaved ice and berries inside ♡ The tartness of the berries and the just-right sweetness of the whipped cream are amazing.

Kyo-gori Yukimi-an in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, is a popular shop where you can enjoy kakigori (shaved ice) that looks like art.
The interior, renovated from a kominka (traditional Japanese house), has a calm atmosphere with the warmth of wood. There are 15 seats in total, including counter seating, and it often fills up in summer.
A wide range of syrups, from standard favorites to seasonal limited editions, is one of the reasons for its popularity!
The "ichigo matcha (strawberry matcha)," with its beautiful contrast of red and green, comes topped with espuma and shiratama (rice flour dumplings), and is said to contain strawberry pieces and azuki (red beans) inside. You can enjoy many different flavors in one dessert, so it offers a high level of satisfaction.

• Apple pie kakigori (shaved ice)
This felt fresh and also really worked as a kakigori setup. It seemed like an ingredient that would work well whether you use a lot of it or just a little as an accent. Both the apple sauce and the custard were perfect, and the confiture was more satisfying than expected, which was great. I think I could highly recommend it to just about anyone. It was delicious

ぶたがすき
There were so many kinds that I could hardly choose, but I went with the slightly unusual cookie and cafe mocha tiramisu. It was less sweet than I expected, which was just my taste! Be careful, because you can't get in without a reservation!

From regular staples to limited-time specials, the wide range of flavors is part of the appeal!
The "Kakifuji" in the photo is shaved ice shaped like Mount Fuji and generously topped with a rich persimmon syrup, with a milk-based center. It is said to strike an excellent balance between Japanese and Western flavors, making it tasty all the way to the last bite.
The Uji matcha (powdered green tea) shaved ice menu is extensive, and you can choose from several kinds of matcha.
The "Uji and hojicha (roasted green tea) half-and-half" is an irresistible item for tea lovers. It is said to have kurozato kanten (brown sugar agar jelly) inside the ice, so you can enjoy a range of textures and flavors all at once.
り き
・Oeda no Kaki (persimmon)
The base is milk syrup, with fruit pulp, shiro miso (white miso) whipped cream, persimmon syrup, and jelly. They really have a genius touch when it comes to bringing out the best in fruit. It is a simple style, but the shiro miso whipped cream adds just the right change of flavor, which is also nice. The main focus, above all, is the great taste of the persimmon.

・Seasonal limited coffee and pistachio
I was wondering how whipped cream would work on kakigori (shaved ice), but it goes amazingly well with it! It added richness and smoothness, making it feel much more like a dessert. Inside, there were plenty of fragrant coffee nuts, and the balance of sweetness, bitterness, and nuttiness was excellent.

For kakigori (shaved ice), there are two kinds, "Matcha no Kakigori" made with matcha from Kyoto and "Ichigo no Kakigori," along with a limited-time sauce.

I visited in search of kakigori (shaved ice) ^_^ and ordered the strawberry and mango. The mango one came with a cream sauce. I wonder if the ice was made with oolong tea! The mango was delicious♪ It was incredibly light! It was almost too light, so I finished it in no time(笑)

For dessert at the end, I chose the matcha shaved ice. It was not too sweet and had a clean finish. The staff were also cheerful and pleasant.

They also offer limited flavors, so you can enjoy a range of tastes depending on the season.
The “miruku hojicha (milk roasted green tea)” features carefully shaved ice with a lively look, a pleasantly crisp texture, and a smooth melt-in-your-mouth feel! The just-right bitterness of the hojicha pairs well with the milk, making it a dish that really shows attention to detail.

I had the milk kintoki kakigori (shaved ice with condensed milk and sweet red beans). The fluffy, snow-white ice was loaded with condensed milk, and the gently sweet azuki (sweet red beans) peeking through made me smile right away. As I kept eating, matcha ice cream appeared from underneath. It was a refined, happy kind of kakigori where classic Japanese flavors came together beautifully✨

I ordered the seasonal pumpkin milk. I usually like fruit-based flavors, so this is not normally my go-to kind of drink, but there were no fruit-based seasonal specials at the time, so I chose this one instead. Even though it was pumpkin, it did not feel heavy and tasted light and refreshing! And as always, the way the ice melted in the mouth was wonderful!

Many people are said to visit because they are drawn in by visuals that look like a work of art.
The "Cherry Cheesecake" is a dish generously topped with an anglaise base and plenty of cheesecake sauce, then finished with American cherries. It is popular for being fun to eat like a parfait.

Unexpected flavors like “potato salad” and “purple cabbage” may also make an appearance.
The “horenso no shira-ae (spinach dressed with tofu sauce)” is said to be an exciting mix, with the sharp bite of wasabina (Japanese mustard greens), the rich tofu cream, and the sweetness of the hidden kabocha salad all matching perfectly.

I ordered the caramel macchiato. The ice was fluffy. The whipped cream on top went well with the caramel syrup, and it was very good. There was coffee jelly inside, and berry puree near the bottom. I usually get tired of kakigori (shaved ice) toward the end, but I enjoyed this one all the way through.

・Bramley apple pie
The Bramley filling and sauce were both packed with fruit. With the cinnamon and pie, it went perfectly with the apple pie caramel milk! Inside were custard and rum raisins. The custard was rich and thick. Great news for anyone with a sweet tooth. It finished on a refreshing note with my favorite black tea syrup~

The "Choco to Banana to Omikan no Custard" is a rich type made with plenty of chocolate syrup, milk syrup, and nuts.
Even though the sweetness hits hard, the omikan (mandarin orange)-flavored diplomat cream adds a nice accent and leaves your mouth feeling refreshed.
Photograph:Thavasa0_0
They also offer simple classic kakigori (shaved ice) options, such as the “Strawberry Milk” shown in the photo.
The strawberry sauce, made by combining Benihoppe and Akihime strawberries, has a light, natural sweetness that is less rich than it looks. Condensed milk ice cream is hidden inside, so you can enjoy the change in flavor as you eat.

• Persimmon Milk
Anyway, the kaki puree (persimmon puree) is just unbelievably good. The kinako (roasted soybean flour) yogurt kuromitsu (brown sugar syrup) ginger flavor in the second half (what is that?) was also far more delicious than I ever imagined. I think it was the right call to eat the first and second halves separately. I’m pretty sure I had it last year too, but for some reason it really moved me this time. It was so good.

My first avocado kakigori (shaved ice)! It is amazing how avocado turns into a rich, creamy sauce! So good and mellow! The cheese syrup, condensed milk syrup, and pear compote add sweetness, so it really feels like a proper dessert! Sprinkle on the rock salt from the cute tiny little cup, and it becomes that sweet-and-salty flavor I love!

I visited to try the white ichigo (strawberry) kakigori (shaved ice). It was piled with so many white ichigo that it was almost hard to eat,, and the berries were more tart than sweet, but still very good. The balance of the syrup, hojicha (roasted green tea) jelly, and yogurt cream was excellent, and they paired really well with the tart berries. It was very delicious.
