[Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture] Restaurants Where You Can Enjoy Seafood

le・sud

le・sud is a French restaurant in Fukuoka City opened by two people who met while training in southern France. It is about a 5-minute walk from Yakuin Station.

The calm dining room, where you can sit back and relax, has only about 12 seats. It is by reservation only, so you can enjoy your meal at a leisurely pace.

The dishes here focus on seasonal vegetables and seafood. The restaurant sources fresh seafood mainly from fishing ports in Kyushu, so you can enjoy flavors that are unique to each season.

Every dish is well balanced with its serving ware, and the beautiful presentation is also well liked. The Appetizers also seem to include creative touches that bring seafood to mind.

The specialty is “soupe de poisson.” It is also a local dish from southern France, and they use every part possible, including the heads and flesh of about 5 kinds of fish.

The soup, packed with concentrated umami, is said to be outstandingly good, and some reviews said it feels highly satisfying even without any meat dishes.

Rather than wowing diners with flashy surprises on each plate, this restaurant gave me the impression that it is fully focused on how to bring out the umami of seafood in a layered way. You can sense that direction clearly from the very first amuse-bouche. The soft texture of the sour cream is layered with the briny pop and umami of kogane ikura (golden salmon roe), creating a nice contrast in texture.

What won me over most was the signature soup. It had a deep, concentrated flavor with layers of fish umami built up with care, and I almost said out loud, "One more bowl." The course also makes generous use of vegetables, so as a vegetable lover, I was happy to see one pleasing dish after another. What surprised me most about the course as a whole was how filling it was, yet how light my body felt after the meal.

Rekaye Oyster Bar JR Hakata City Ten

"Rekaye Oyster Bar JR Hakata City Ten" is an oyster bar restaurant in Fukuoka City with restaurants across Japan. It is on the 10th floor of JR Hakata City, directly connected to Hakata Station.

They also have counter seating that is easy to use even when dining alone, as well as table seating for families and groups.

The signature oysters are sourced from production regions across Japan, so you can enjoy fresh oysters all year round.

They purify them with kaiyo shinso-sui (deep ocean water) drawn from seas so deep that sunlight cannot reach, so they are said to be safe to eat raw. It also brings out more umami.

They offer a wide range of dishes made with oysters. In addition to oysters, they also serve seafood dishes with shrimp, mussels, and more.

The drink menu is also extensive, with a focus on white wines that pair well with seafood. They also have meal sets that are perfect when you want to have a quick drink.

The quality of the raw oysters is consistently high. The raw oysters, beautifully arranged on ice, are exciting from the moment you see them. Each production region has a clear character, with options like ・rich and milky ones ・light ones with standout umami, making them fun to compare. The lemon and sauces are simple too, which left a good impression because they do not get in the way of the oysters' natural flavor.

It’s easy to get to, the food quality is consistent, and the drink menu is extensive, exactly my ideal kind of place. I ordered the Kyushu-fumi (Kyushu-style) oyster assortment. It was amazing how the strong acidity, saltiness, umami, and sweetness came one after another. I also tried two fresh oysters from different production regions with no seasoning. I’m truly grateful for the bounty of the sea...

Kani Tsugu

Kani Tsugu is located in the lively Nakasu area, one of Fukuoka’s busiest entertainment districts. Among seafood, it specializes in crab.

The restaurant has a Japanese modern design, and all seating is in Private rooms. Even small groups can dine in calm, private spaces with a relaxed feel.

You can order either a course meal or à la carte. The popular choice is the all-crab course.

Everything uses crab, including sashimi, steamed dishes, and Hot Pot dishes. They add vegetables to warmed dashi, then swish the crab legs through it shabu-shabu style, which brings out a different kind of good flavor from eating it raw.

The "Kani Koramori (crab meat neatly arranged back in the shell after boiling and picking)" is also popular. They also serve dishes you can enjoy with luxurious ingredients like caviar, uni (sea urchin), and ikura (salmon roe).

They also offer tempura and sushi, and the restaurant is well known for letting you enjoy refined Japanese seafood.

Next came the zuwaigani (snow crab) koura-mori (crab shell assortment), one of the highlights of this course. The shell was packed tight with crab meat, and it looked rich and luxurious, while the meat had a tender texture that gently came apart in the mouth. I liked that they did not cover it up with heavy seasoning and instead let you really taste the natural sweetness of the crab itself. It was simple, but highly satisfying, a classic dish.

The staff were, of course, friendly, polite, and really great too! And of course, every dish was delicious! What got me most excited was that each person gets 1 tin of caviar! There was plenty in it, so I really got to enjoy it! Eating it on uni (sea urchin) was by far the best and absolutely amazing!

The oysters were medium sized, but they had plenty of meat. We ate them with the various seasonings we brought along. They were good with every flavor, but the basil paste and grated cheese were a perfect match and especially tasty! The kids also ordered hokke (Atka mackerel), hiougi-gai (file shell clam), and some foil grilled dishes. We also ate the rice balls we had brought, ordered a few more rounds of oysters, and everyone ended up totally full from the meal〜

While sightseeing in Itoshima, I love oysters, so I looked up an oyster hut that stays open until April and visited. The limited-quantity kaisendon (seafood Rice bowl) was fresh and came with a wide variety of toppings! My favorites were the scallops, shrimp, and hamaguri (hard clam). It was my first time grilling and eating them right in front of me, but getting to enjoy fresh shellfish made it a great experience.

The course centers on seafood that is unique to the season, sourced from Kanezaki Gyoko (Kanezaki Fishing Port) near the restaurant. The dishes change depending on what comes in that day.

They mainly use local vegetables and fruit as well, and value flavors unique to the area.

I had the La Tache course for dinner. It was a course that made generous use of seafood, and everything was good, but there were two dishes made with kohada (gizzard shad), and both were delicious. It was also my first time trying a salad with kohada soft roe, and it was creamy and very tasty.

This is a lovely, very calm restaurant with a classical feel, yet it has an atmosphere that lets you relax and enjoy yourself without feeling formal. Each dish was beautifully presented, and the pairing with the tableware was wonderful as well. Every dish, made with plenty of fresh fish, really brought out the appeal of the ingredients. The cooking was simple, but you could clearly feel the care and attention behind it.
