Let's head to an izakaya around Kusatsu Station! 20 picks to enjoy great drinks and tasty bites

JR Kusatsu Station, located in the center of southeastern Shiga Prefecture, is a major transportation hub with one of the highest passenger numbers in the prefecture. Around the station, large shopping complexes line the area, while the townscape also charms visitors with the lingering atmosphere of a former post town on the old Tokaido (Eastern Sea Route) and Nakasendo (Central Mountain Route). For food, Omi gyu (Omi beef) and the Japanese sweet ubagamochi are well known. In this article, we have rounded up izakaya (Japanese pubs) around Kusatsu Station.

Sakaba Stand Uomaru

Sakaba Stand Uomaru is a popular spot about a 2-minute walk from the East Exit of Kusatsu Station, where you can enjoy seiro-mushi (steamed dishes in a bamboo steamer), fresh seafood, and Japanese sake.

The interior has a casual, lively feel. With its open-kitchen style where they cook right in front of you, you can enjoy it like an izakaya bar.

They offer courses with All you can drink Japanese sake and shochu, so you can fully enjoy seafood dishes such as an assortment of sashimi made with fresh fish shipped direct from the production region.

They have a wide selection of Japanese sake, from easy-drinking labels to rare ones.

The popular menu item "katsuo (bonito) no shio tataki" uses fresh katsuo shipped directly from Tosa Fishing Port in Kochi Prefecture.

The skin is crisp and fragrant, while the flesh is tender and juicy in this tataki. Because they are confident in the quality of the ingredients, they keep it simple with just salt, scallions, and garlic.

I visited solo for drinks. The counter seats wrap around the kitchen, so it feels very comfortable even when you're on your own. The recommendations are nicely organized and very easy to order from, the staff are very friendly, the food is very affordable, and above all, every single dish was really delicious—I became a huge fan!

ほたるるるるる

The specialty Uomaru assortment is an assortment of ozukuri (sliced raw fish) and shio-tataki (lightly seared fish with salt). Everything is fresh and delicious, but the shio-tataki is especially outstanding. The light sear and salt level are just right, bringing out the natural umami of the ingredients. To finish, I had the kai-dashi (shellfish broth) Shio Ramen, which was light yet full of flavor, making it just the right bowl after drinks, and I left feeling Manzoku.

ゆめチュウ

The standout is the steak. It is tender, and you can taste the meat's flavor directly. You can eat it with salt, the house sauce, or wasabi. With the sauce, it tastes like the kind of steak you get at a steakhouse, while the salt gives you a strong hit of the meat's umami. The wasabi is also incredibly good.

びわこホークス

It was not as crowded as I expected, so I was able to relax and enjoy eating and drinking. They have a wide wine selection, and all of the sangria was good and easy to drink, almost like juice. They also have meat sushi, and they sear it right in front of you, which makes it incredibly delicious, so if you visit, definitely give it a try!

It was my first time visiting this restaurant, and every dish was delicious, and the tableware was lovely too. I was very Manzoku. I think I will become a repeat customer. The restaurant was also full of customers, so I could get in because I had a reservation, but if you plan to visit, please make a reservation.

流離(さすらい)

On the vegetable assortment, the sauce had the word "Nagi" written on it, and that kind of thoughtful touch was a nice surprise♪The seasonal vegetables grilled over charcoal were delicious. The fresh seafood, including hamo (pike conger) and squid dressed with liver sauce, was all fresh and very tasty. The manager and staff were also wonderfully friendly and attentive, and even though the place was busy, we were able to enjoy the drinks and food in comfort.

The daily a la carte dishes made with fresh fish sourced directly from Kyoto's wholesale market are popular. In addition to seafood dishes, they also serve meat dishes, so you can enjoy seasonal ingredients.

The steak made with Omi gyu (Omi beef) lets you enjoy the meat's natural flavor.

yama-log

Rather than the lively atmosphere of a typical izakaya (Japanese pub), it feels like a calm, grown-up space. You can take your time enjoying the food and drinks, so it seemed well suited not only for meals with friends but also for casual business entertainment and dinner meetings.

アサタロー

The course follows the classic lineup of Japanese cuisine, with sashimi, fried dishes, and grilled dishes.
The sashimi is cut beautifully, and the quality of the fish is steady. The ingredients are not flashy, but the careful work comes through. The fried dishes are not greasy, and the coating does not overpower the food. Including the temperature control, nothing feels carelessly served.

Ano Sora no Higashi

The fish used in the dishes is shipped directly from fishing ports in Kochi and Ishikawa. They also have their own sourcing routes in places like Kyoto, Hyogo, and Oita.

They also offer course meals of refined washoku (Japanese cuisine) made with seasonal ingredients, with an All you can drink option included.

The course is packed with items such as sakizuke (appetizer), hassun (seasonal assortment platter), otsukuri (sashimi), shiizakana (main dish), and mushimono (steamed dish). It ends with Clay Pot rice, so you may feel ready to burst by the end.

I really love Anosoranohigashi, and I’ve been there many times! This time, they also prepared a message plate for dessert! The drinks are good, and of course so is the food. The Kara-age is tasty too!! If there’s any Sea Bream rice left over, they make it into rice balls for you to take home.

ktaji2091

We chose the All you can drink course and ordered the food à la carte. The sashimi was fresh and delicious. The house made potato salad was not the usual mayonnaise mixed potato salad, but one seasoned with salt in a way that lets the natural flavor of the potatoes shine. The mayonnaise was lightly drizzled over it, and it went perfectly with the soft boiled egg served on the side.

・Lively! Smile Course
The main Chige Hot Pot had a nice moderate kick, and it was easy to eat and delicious. The Kara-age and fries tasted freshly fried, crispy on the outside and juicy inside, making it a very Manzoku meal.

I stop by here after work! It’s way better value to order A la carte than to go with All you can drink. The food is also really good, so this is basically my go-to spot when I want to have a drink(^^)

Uotami Kusatsu Nishiguchi Ekimae Ten

Uotami Kusatsu Nishiguchi Ekimae Ten is a restaurant where you can enjoy Japanese food such as sashimi and kyodo ryori (regional cuisine) in a calm Japanese-style setting. It has plenty of Private room options, so you can relax and enjoy your meal and drinks at an easy pace.

It is located very close to the west exit of Kusatsu Station, on the basement level 1 of Hotel Boston Plaza Kusatsu.

They offer a wide lineup of course meals that come with All you can drink, featuring dishes made with seasonal ingredients as well as standard izakaya fare.

The motsu-nabe (offal Hot Pot) uses a miso base with added tonkotsu (pork bone broth), giving it a rich flavor.

In addition to course meals, they also offer a wide range of à la carte dishes.

The "Tokudai Saba no Aburi-yaki (extra-large seared mackerel)" is so huge it hangs over the edge of the plate. It is said to be so filling that this dish alone can leave you full.

The food and drinks arrived quickly, probably because it was still early on a weekday, and I was Manzoku. Everything was good, and the yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) was especially nice.

It was crowded, but the food still came out fairly smoothly☺︎I really liked the burdock root Kara-age and ended up ordering it about 5 times lol. I also liked that the dashimaki omelet was so hot it was still steaming.
