Popular Cafes in Kitakyushu City's Kokura Area

Shunkashaya Hi to Jiki

Shunka Chasha Hi to Jiki in Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu City, is a specialty shop for seasonal sweets and nihoncha (Japanese tea).

The first floor is a retail space, and the second floor is a cafe area. The interior has a stylish, chic wa-modern (Japanese modern) look.

At this restaurant, you can enjoy creative sweets that reflect the changing seasons. The sweets are Homemade in the restaurant kitchen, starting with anko (sweet bean paste made by simmering beans and kneading them into a paste).

The sweets are mildly sweet, with a gentle flavor that pairs well with delicate tea.

The Japanese tea lineup focuses on teas from the Kyushu region. Since the main selection is made up of leaves from single farms and single cultivars, each tea leaf is said to show its own character.

For Japanese tea, A la carte options are available, but the courses that also let you enjoy sweets are especially popular.

Both the presentation and the taste of the food were very elegant, and I enjoyed everything very much. They also have a wide selection of tea, and it is always excellent—if you want Japanese tea, this is the place. It is a wonderful shop where you can enjoy seasonal wagashi (Japanese sweets) throughout the year and feel the seasons and Japanese culture in everyday life.

They keep artificial seasonings to a minimum, and even the sauces and dressings are homemade. The natural, refined seasoning let the care for the ingredients come through, and it was really delicious. The owner-chef, who has been certified as a Kita-Kyushu Waza no Tatsujin (Kitakyushu Master of Craft), has the skill to bring out the best in each ingredient with cooking methods tailored to each one.

アマヤカ

This restaurant is on the second floor inside Kyo-machi Arcade. I had the roast beef Rice bowl lunch and dessert set. The Wagyu roast beef and egg were generous, and although the egg was large enough to hide about half of it, there was plenty of meat. The meat was tender and delicious. The dessert cake is also Homemade. With the rice and dessert, the portion was just right for me.

・Plate lunch
I could choose from about 5 kinds of mains. The chicken nanban (fried chicken with tartar sauce) plate came with a hearty portion of chicken plus 4〜5 side dishes, and many of the ingredients used were the kind your body will appreciate. You could also choose either white rice or multigrain rice, so this lunch is recommended for people who are health conscious.

・Lunch Hamburger Steak Plate
It may be that the friendly owner is running the place solo, but the Hamburger Steak Plate was served at just the right time without a long wait, and I really enjoyed it. The mazesoba (mixed noodles) on the menu looked very good, so I’ll stop by again when I get the chance.

・Lunch sashimi platter
It was a staff recommended menu item♡The sashimi was fresh and tasty, and the fried white fish on the side was also good with no sense of corners being cut. The seating inside was nicely spaced, so it felt very comfortable. I was surprised to find sashimi at a cafe, but I was even more surprised by how good it was‼︎The pasta and Mazesoba also keep up a steady level of quality, and even though this place feels like a hidden gem, isn’t it kind of amazing!?

I visited for lunch. The menu was extensive, with a daily lunch plate, pasta, doria (Japanese-style baked rice gratin), and more, so it was hard to choose. I ordered the bagel lunch plate. You can choose from three fillings for the bagel, and I went with smoked salmon. This is a good restaurant for people with children.
