Shigetake

Shigetake, located on the second floor of a building along Nishi Ginza-dori, is a 7-minute walk from Yurakucho Station. This long-established tempura restaurant was founded in 1914.

The interior has a refined and calm sukiya-zukuri (traditional Japanese architectural style) feel, with a small space that has only 8 counter seats made from natural white wood.

One of the main draws is that from every seat, you can watch the chefs at work up close. You can also enjoy the freshly fried tempura (Japanese battered and deep-fried seafood and vegetables) while it is still piping hot.

A standout feature is that they fry the tempura in custom made sesame oil prepared over 3 days and 3 nights using a technique passed down for generations. The batter is said to be crisp, light, and fragrant, bringing out the natural goodness of the ingredients.

For dinner, they offer two types of courses: one with tempura only and one that also includes a la carte dishes. It is a two-part service with fixed start times.

For lunch, you can order either a course enjoyed with a la carte dishes or one of six tendon (tempura Rice bowl) options topped with tempura over rice. The photo shows the "anago (conger eel) tempura Rice bowl," which is said to have soft, flaky anago.

Since it has been around since the Taisho era, you can really feel the tradition. The restaurant is not large, but it has a cozy atmosphere somehow. The chef fries seasonal vegetables and fish as tempura. On this day, goby was in season, so I had it as tempura. It was a highly satisfying course, all the way through to the final tendon (tempura Rice bowl) or tenchazuke (tempura over rice with tea poured over it).

I visited this Ginza Tabelog 100 tempura restaurant for lunch. Shrimp, shrimp head, asparagus, salad, ginkgo nuts, maguro (tuna), kakiage (mixed tempura fritter), hamo (pike conger), uni (sea urchin), anago (conger eel), and a tempura Rice bowl to finish. Every item was perfectly done, but the maguro and uni were especially outstanding. I thought the uni might be an extra add-on, so I was happy to see that it was properly included in the course.

Tempura Ginza Onodera Namiki-dori Ten

Tempura Ginza Onodera Namikidori Ten is on the 6th floor of a building along Namiki-dori, a 12-minute walk from Yurakucho Station. They serve Special seasonal tempura courses featuring seafood and vegetables.

The interior has a clean and calm feel. There are only 10 counter seats.

For the frying oil, they use unroasted, first-pressed goma-abura (sesame oil). The batter is said to be crisp and light, with a refined sweetness that lets you fully enjoy the natural flavor of the ingredients.

A nice plus is that from any seat, you can watch the chef’s delicate technique right in front of you while enjoying piping hot tempura served fresh from the fryer.

For lunch, they offer courses that let you enjoy tempura more casually than at dinner.

The most popular is the “Namiki” course. It includes tempura made with the chef’s Special selection of vegetables and seafood, along with a rice dish and dessert. The sea urchin tempura in the photo is said to be an outstanding item served only with the “Namiki” course.

The best tempura I’ve ever had! Everything I ate was delicious. It had a super light, crispy texture, so it never felt heavy and I could keep eating with no problem. They were particular about all the ingredients, from the vegetables to the fish, and it was fun hearing the explanations too. All the staff were friendly and fun, which made the time I spent there even happier.

This was completely different from any tempura (Japanese deep-fried batter dish) I’ve had before! I was amazed by how good the ingredients themselves tasted. Everything was delicious, but the sweet satsumaimo (Japanese sweet potato), the hotate (scallop) cooked with perfect heat, and the uni (sea urchin) tempura wrapped in oba (perilla leaf) were especially outstanding! I left feeling full, but the batter was so light that it didn’t feel heavy at all.

The interior, with counter seating and Private room seating, has a refined and calm Japanese atmosphere. It is on the 5th floor of a building along Ginza Mihara-dori, about a 13-minute walk from Yurakucho Station.

One of the big draws here is that you can enjoy luxurious seafood tempura such as uni (sea urchin) and awabi (abalone). They catch each ingredient at its best moment and wrap it in a light batter so you can enjoy its natural flavor. The moment you take a bite, the rich umami is said to spill out.

They also offer a wide selection of drinks that pair well with tempura, including wine and Japanese sake.

The counter seats are a big draw because they serve the freshly fried items right away.

The photo shows the famous “Ebi Dock,” a signature item included in almost every course. It is a sushi roll with ebi (shrimp) tempura placed on rice and wrapped in nori (seaweed), and depending on the course, you can also get versions topped with kani (crab) or uni (sea urchin).

かぼちゃちゃちゃあ

Wanting to eat tempura in Ginza, I had the Omakase premium kaiseki course here. The shrimp tempura was crispy and plump, and tasted really good. They used luxury ingredients like caviar, which made the meal feel extra special. Japanese sake paired very well with it.

I visited for lunch. Being able to enjoy good food and beer from midday on a weekday really feels like the best. The sushi and tempura course felt fresh and fun. They served the sushi and tempura one piece at a time, and the staff also showed a high level of hospitality.

They use Special seasonal ingredients selected from all over Japan. They will show them to you directly, and you can also place additional orders.

They fry the shrimp so the inside stays rare, and steam-fry the shiitake mushrooms so they keep their nice toasted aroma, among other techniques. It is professional level skill that words cannot fully capture, so above all I recommend trying it for yourself! The interior, where they fry everything right in front of you, makes it even better. I also added kaki (oyster), awabi (abalone), and uni (sea urchin), and I was very satisfied.

We thoroughly enjoyed the ozashiki tempura (tatami room tempura), with the head chef frying it right in front of us. He carefully explained each item one by one, including the production region, and also told us which salt or sauce paired best. My companion was also Manzoku. The red wine went well with it too. Everyone at the restaurant was kind and made us feel welcome. We will visit again.

I visited on a weekday evening and got in without waiting. I ordered the tantan-soba (buckwheat noodles with sesame-spiced dipping sauce) and a tempura assortment, which I had been curious about for a while. The tempura was tasty, and the maitake (hen-of-the-woods mushroom) was especially satisfying to eat. The tantan-soba was served in a style where you dip the soba into a tantanmen-style broth.

This time, I ordered the "value set," which comes with tempura, otsumami (small plates to go with drinks), and even soba to finish. This lineup lets you enjoy drinks with freshly fried tempura and end the meal smoothly with soba, so the level of Manzoku is very high. The staff were also lively and very pleasant.

They have a great selection of Okinawa sake, and I was so excited! Every dish was really good, and the mozuku tempura (deep-fried mozuku seaweed) was the standout! When the weather gets warmer, I find myself thinking about Okinawa more often, so I’d love to visit again.

We visited on Sunday at 19:00 with 2 people. First of all, the restaurant’s atmosphere, from the interior to the music, was so great that it felt like we had come to Taketomi-jima (Taketomi Island). Orion draft beer tasted especially good in that setting! The Okinawan tempura was also high quality piece by piece, and it made for a very satisfying shimanchu (Okinawan) dinner.

This tempura Rice bowl was topped mainly with springy, sweet shrimp tempura, along with assorted vegetable tempura. It paired well with the red miso soup and pickles, and it was very tasty.
