Seafood galore at izakaya in Hakodate! 20 popular spots where you can enjoy fresh treasures from the sea

Hakodate is in southern Hokkaido and is known for its beautiful night views and historic buildings. When it comes to food, the city has plenty of fresh seafood, and Hakodate Asaichi (Hakodate Morning Market) is especially popular for Kaisendon (seafood Rice bowls) piled high with fresh sea urchin, scallops, squid, and more. Hakodate also has a large squid catch, so ika-sashi (sliced raw squid) and ika-somen (thinly sliced squid) are especially good. This time, we have put together a list of recommended izakaya in Hakodate.

The "osashimi assortment" features seasonal seafood such as salmon, chutoro (medium fatty tuna), and white fish.

The thickness of each slice and the freshness really stand out, letting you fully enjoy the natural flavor of the fish, and it pairs great with alcohol. It is well loved as a must order dish for fish lovers.

The squid sashimi was really delicious, and I personally liked the zaru-dofu (basket-strained tofu) so much that I wanted to buy some to take home! Overall, the seasoning pairs well with drinks. It felt like I got to enjoy a lot of Hokkaido’s great food. I made a reservation before going, and the room they showed us to was a Private room, so it was nice to relax and enjoy our time there.

I had heard the sanma (Pacific saury) was a good size, so I was looking forward to it, and it arrived in a style different from what I had imagined. They had crisped up even the head and backbone into a senbei-like cracker, leaving nothing to waste. Even the innards were turned into a carefully prepared element that worked like a sauce. It was very easy to eat, the salt level was just right, and it was really delicious. The careful preparation makes it approachable even for people who are not great at eating fish. Wonderful

I was drawn in by something called Mao Zedong zangi (Hokkaido-style fried chicken) and decided to visit. The zangi was topped with something like taberu rayu (chili oil with bits to eat), which gave it a mildly spicy kick. The sashimi came in thick cuts and was very satisfying to eat. This time we went as a party of two, so we ordered for two servings, but it seems that from 3 to 4 servings, it comes as a funamori (boat-shaped sashimi assortment). The hokke (Atka mackerel) was flaky and tasty too. They have dozens of kinds of Japanese sake in small bottles that are just the right size to finish.

Sandaime Amimoto Uosen Suisan Hakodate Goryokaku Honcho Ten

Sandai-me Amimoto Uosen Suisan Hakodate Goryokaku Honcho Ten is a seafood izakaya located about a 3-minute walk from Goryokaku Koen-mae tram stop.

Along with fresh seafood prepared from the fish tank in the restaurant, it also offers Hokkaido gourmet dishes and a good selection of drinks. The spacious interior has a lively feel, making it a good choice for a fun night out with friends.

"Katsu ika sashi (live squid sashimi)" is a Hakodate local specialty that catches the eye with its translucent flesh and moving geso (squid tentacles). The goro (innards) has no off notes, and the taste clearly shows how fresh it is.

When you squeeze lemon over it, the legs move, which adds to the experience and makes it feel very Hakodate.

The tebasaki (chicken wings) are said to be crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, making them a great match for beer.

They also offer a wide selection of drinks and snack menu items, which makes it easy to keep the drinks coming.

いとごはん

The menu is wide-ranging, with not just seafood but also skewers, salads, and a la carte dishes, so anyone can enjoy it ◎ The most Surprising item was the ikiika (live squid). The staff explained that if you squeeze lemon on it, it moves, and its legs really did move!! After seeing that, we had them deep-fry it. I felt a little bad, but it was very good. The jagabata (buttered potato) is also recommended!

くろあめ

The menu goes beyond just seafood, with fresh fish dishes like sashimi, Hot Pot, Wagyu, and jingisukan (grilled mutton), so you can try a wide range of items. We ordered sashimi and grilled fish, and the seasonal tachi-ponzu (cod milt with ponzu sauce) was plump, creamy, rich, and delicious.

Kappo Izakaya Yoi no Ma

Kappo Izakaya Yoi no Ma〇, about a 5-minute walk from Goryokaku-Koenmae tram stop, is a kappo izakaya geared toward adults.

The interior, marked by its white wood counter, has an elegant and calm atmosphere. It also has Sunken kotatsu seating Private room options, making it a place where you can relax and enjoy food and drinks.

The “sashimi go-ten-mori (five-item sashimi assortment)” is made with fresh fish sourced that day, and it is said to be a plate that shows both freshness and careful preparation.

The hon-maguro (bluefin tuna) chutoro and uni (sea urchin) in particular have a rich, melting texture, and the careful knife work really comes through, making the drinks go down easy.

The shiro-ebi (glass shrimp) kakiage (mixed tempura fritter) is said to be lightly fried with a taste that doesn’t feel greasy.

They also offer a good range of à la carte dishes, such as shiro reba (white liver) pâté and Ezojika (Hokkaido venison) roast, which are also popular for pairing well with Japanese sake and wine.

ihiromita

This hidden kappo izakaya (Japanese-style pub serving refined small plates) stands quietly a little away from the center of Goryokaku. It has a mature atmosphere and an upscale exterior, and it mainly offers Private rooms, so it seems well suited for business occasions as well. Every dish is carefully prepared and beautifully presented, and tastes outstanding. The staff are also attentive, so this is an easy place to recommend.

The fried dishes, including yamaimo (Japanese mountain yam) tempura and shiroebi (glass shrimp) kakiage fritters, were not greasy and had just the right seasoning. They also had the slightly unusual Shamrock chicken Kara-age, and it made a great snack with drinks when dipped in sesame oil. The floor was covered with tamajari (decorative gravel), so the place looked a bit expensive, but the prices were as reasonable as a regular izakaya.

Western Kitchen

"Western Kitchen" is an izakaya about a 4-minute walk from Goryokaku Koen-mae tram stop, tucked away in an alley in Yanagawacho. The stylish interior offers a lineup centered on Kyushu ryori (Kyushu cuisine).

They also have a wide selection of Imo Shochu, making it a great spot for a relaxed night of drinks.

The "Ganso Miso Motsu Hot Pot" is said to pair rich miso broth well with plump motsu (offal).

The sweetness of the cabbage and nira (garlic chives) also stands out, and the sense of Manzoku continues through the finishing ramen. People also like that they use noodles that do not get soggy easily.

The "Chicken Nanban" is a popular menu item, with hearty chicken generously coated in homemade tartar sauce.

It is said to have a juicy finish and a flavor that goes great with drinks. The rich seasoning, typical of Kyushu (Kyushu region), is also part of its appeal.

はっすぃはっすぃ

A hidden izakaya tucked away in an alley in Yanagawamachi. The restaurant has a Western style atmosphere, but it serves Kyushu cuisine. I see. From the name Western Kitchen, I had vaguely imagined American style food, but maybe it means “the kitchen of western Japan, Kyushu.” If you walk in expecting Western dining, it feels Surprising. They have a lot of motsu (offal), tori-nabe (chicken Hot Pot), and chicken dishes.

The weather was bad for our planned Goryokaku cherry blossom viewing, so we had a Banquet here instead. The staff were polite and attentive, and we had a very comfortable time. Thank you. We enjoyed motsu-nabe (offal hot pot), with tender motsu and both soy sauce and miso flavors. We were full after the noodles at the end. It was a great meal.
