Gunma Prefecture: Popular Izakaya in Takasaki

hoderi

Hoderi is a Japanese-style pub located a 5-minute walk from the East Exit of JR Takasaki Station. Surrounded by natural solid wood, stone, and other raw materials, it offers a stylish and warm space where you can enjoy tasty food and drinks.

It is a popular place, so making a reservation is recommended. It has both counter and table seating.

They offer 3 courses including options with All you can drink, and you can also order from the à la carte menu. They have a wide selection of drinks, including local sake from Gunma Prefecture, Japanese sake, and wine.

The photo shows their signature "gyu-motsu nabe (beef offal Hot Pot)," which pairs well with Japanese sake. It is made with plump Gunma-produced beef offal and vegetables, finished in a special soup.

The "katsuo no wara-yaki (straw-seared bonito)" is another house specialty, made by boldly searing bonito from Kochi Prefecture over rice straw. Each slice is thick, and it has a great taste that lets you enjoy more umami the more you chew. It also goes well with drinks.

Both specialties are available a la carte, and you can also enjoy them in any course menu.

What stood out to me most was the katsuo (bonito) wara-yaki (straw-seared dish)! The toasty aroma unique to wara-yaki and the rich flavor of the katsuo spread through my mouth, and it paired perfectly with Japanese sake. The sashimi made with fresh seafood and the dishes made with seasonal vegetables were all delicious too, and I found myself drinking more and more Japanese sake.

Kaoru Ale had creamy foam, and the thin glass was nicely chilled, which really hit the spot! We enjoyed nama-gaki (fresh oysters) with white wine, katsuo (bonito) wara-yaki (straw-seared) and motsu Hot Pot with Kaku Highball, and charcoal grilled Joshu beef Sirloin cap with Ichiro's Malt Black Label, and both the food and drinks were great. The service was also polite.

Excellent Gunma Food Sanzu

Excellent Gunma Food Sanzu is on the second floor of a building, a 3-minute walk from the West Exit of JR Takasaki Station, where you can enjoy creative dishes made with ingredients from Gunma Prefecture and a wide selection of local sake from Gunma Prefecture.

The calm interior also comes with fully private rooms, and every seat is Sunken kotatsu seating.

They offer three courses with All you can drink that let you enjoy delicious food from Gunma Prefecture, along with a wide selection of à la carte dishes including izakaya menu favorites.

The photo shows their homemade "Joshu-gyu (Joshu beef) Hamburger Steak," made with 100% Joshu-gyu, one of Gunma Prefecture’s signature branded beefs. It is said to be excellent, with juices overflowing from the meat.

The photo shows the most popular item, the "Ebara Herb Pork Yoganseki (lava stone) Steak," made with pork raised without medication in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, and it is said to have a nice natural sweetness from the meat itself.

It is served with steak sauce or with salt and wasabi, depending on your preference, and because it comes out on a Teppan-yaki plate, you can enjoy it hot and tasty.

We ordered the All you can drink option and a course meal. Dish after dish kept coming out, and we were completely full. Everything was tasty, but the Hamburger Steak was especially outstanding. Everyone looked at each other and simply said how good it was. I would like to make a reservation again if I have the chance. I cannot drink much alcohol, but they had a wide selection of Japanese sake.

This restaurant seems to focus mainly on local ingredients, and overall it was at a pretty high level. The Joshu-gyu (Joshu beef) Hamburger Steak is especially worth trying! They also have a good selection of drinks, including whisky such as Ichiro's Malt and Yamazaki. I'd like to visit again the next time I go to Takasaki.

This time, they showed us to a Private room, and it was so comfortable that we ended up staying longer than planned. Overall, we could feel the care they put into everything, from the plating to the tableware, and it was clear how thoughtfully the food was prepared. Of course, the taste was excellent as well, and we were very satisfied. The staff also did a great job explaining the Japanese sake and recommending dishes!

Kaisen Ichiba Karakkaze

Kaisen Ichiba Karakkaze, where you can enjoy Premium fresh seafood and local sake from Gunma Prefecture, is a seafood izakaya popular with locals as well.

It is located right near the West Exit of JR Takasaki Station, inside Central Hotel Takasaki along Symphony Road. The interior has a Japanese feel and offers both table seating and zashiki (tatami floor seating).

They offer both All you can drink courses and an a la carte menu, so you can enjoy it however you like. A sake tasting menu featuring local sake from Gunma Prefecture is also recommended.

The signature dish, "jikasei motsu-nabe nikomi (house made offal Hot Pot stew)," has kept the same flavor since the restaurant first opened. The motsu simmered for a full day is said to be very tender with deep flavor. It is such a popular menu item that it sells out, so going to the restaurant early is recommended.

Besides that, you can also enjoy a wide range of izakaya menu items and daily specials.

I was thinking of ordering atsukan (warmed sake), but since they recommended chilled sake, I had several glasses of a local sake called Takasaki after drinking several draft beers. It was indeed easy to drink. This sake was really good. The draft beer was also easy on the wallet. All of the food was tasty, but since Gunma is known for motsuni (stewed offal), I tried that too.

都市対子

Located on the first floor of a business hotel, this is the kind of place you’d be happy to have in the hotel where you’re staying. They offer a wide range of local sake (Japanese rice wine), and they also had a tasting flight. As for the sashimi (raw sliced fish), even though this is a landlocked prefecture, advances in distribution in recent years meant it was very fresh.

Here you can enjoy the authentic Sendai taste of Beef Tongue, with specialties like beef tongue shabu-shabu, beef tongue sushi, and basashi (horse meat sashimi) assortment. To finish, the horse meat yukhoe Rice bowl I ordered was especially delicious.

The Beef Tongue green onion shabu-shabu in yuzu salt soup came piled high with Beef Tongue and green onions, and it was great with alcohol when swished in the broth and eaten. The negi-mamire (covered with green onions) horse meat yukhoe came topped with plenty of green onions, onions, and egg yolk over the horse meat, and when mixed with the egg yolk, it paired very well with alcohol and was बेहद delicious.

・Kara-age corn
I was curious about this fresh idea for a menu item, so I ordered it. This dish coats sweet corn in batter and fries it until crisp. The corn’s natural sweetness and the salty seasoning are a perfect match, and it goes great with beer! I was impressed by the creativity you do not usually find at a regular izakaya.

レジギガス

Also, the fried horse mackerel is large and crisply fried, making it very tasty. The real highlight is the Japanese sake. Order each one by the go in a glass. It comes in the common style of a glass set inside a masu (wooden sake box) on a round plate, but the pouring is bold. They pour it generously from a 1.8-liter bottle until the plate underneath is filled right up to the surface tension!

This is a casual izakaya pub in front of Takasaki Station. Since it is a chain with locations in various areas, it is easy to visit. There was an offline meetup in Takasaki that day, and we used it for the After-Party. The drinks came out quickly, and the prices were reasonable. There was also a wide variety of snacks, which we enjoyed.

I was happy that the lineup leaned healthy overall, with lots of vegetables and fish. The basashi (horse sashimi) was sweet and delicious, and the tori-ten (chicken tempura) was nice and crispy... Personally, the kibinago (silver-stripe round herring) Kara-age was the most delicious. It was the kind of flavor that went great with drinks.

Popular izakaya (Japanese pubs) in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture

Hakata Taishu Sakaba Kochan Maebashi Eki Minamiguchi Ten

Just outside the south exit of JR Maebashi Station, Hakata Taishu Sakaba Sacchan Maebashi Eki Minamiguchi Ten is a casual izakaya where you can enjoy specialties from Hakata (a district of Fukuoka).

The cozy, homey interior is comfortable and always lively, they say. It has counter and table seating.

This place is run by the famous and popular Hakata ramen shop Hakata Ikkosha, so its Hakata ramen is said to be very good.

Along with the classic Hakata ramen, the menu also offers a range of options such as Hakata Wantanmen (Hakata ramen with wontons) and Hakata Chashumen (Hakata ramen with plenty of chashu pork).

They offer a wide selection of drinks, including local sake from Fukuoka Prefecture. Every dish is tasty, and all of them pair well with drinks.

The popular menu item “Stamina Teppan-yaki Yakiniku” is known as a dish that goes perfectly with beer. The staff also put on a fun performance by mixing the oil and seasonings on the iron plate right in front of you to make the sauce.

かずまろ!

This restaurant takes inspiration from Hakata, so they serve kawa-yaki (grilled chicken skin skewers) made by wrapping on chicken skin. We ordered kushiyaki (grilled skewers), salad, and other dishes. The otoshi (table appetizer) was cabbage, and with gloves on, you could take as much as you liked from a bucket. The food was tasty, with no off notes in the meat, and the kawa-yaki and kushiyaki were grilled just right. There were many kinds of highballs to choose from, and each had its own character and tasted good.

Ureshii Gyoza Bar Ribaaru

Ureshii Gyoza Baru Ribaaru is a gyoza bar within walking distance of Chuo-Maebashi Station, on the corner of Jibabagawa-dori and Chiyoda-dori in central Maebashi.

With its casual atmosphere, you can enjoy gyoza (dumplings), a wide range of Chinese dishes, and drinks.

They offer courses with All you can drink and A la carte options, and there is also an A la carte All you can drink course that is great for people who want to enjoy plenty of drinks while ordering the dishes they like.

The "Ureshii Gyoza (Happy Dumplings)" in the photo is made with 80% vegetables and 20% meat, and it gets good reviews for its crunchy cabbage texture and the tasty flavor that comes from the vegetables.

They also offer a wide range of classic izakaya dishes that pair well with drinks.

錦鯉0115

For now, I ordered a highball and made a toast. Looking at the menu, I saw that several kinds of gyoza were half price until 19:00! I started with shrimp gyoza and a half portion of Kuroge Wagyu (Japanese Black beef) mapo tofu. The shrimp gyoza had a gentle flavor. The mapo tofu had a bold, rich taste that went great with the highball. This might be just the right place for an early round of gyoza and drinks to get things going.

Source:錦鯉0115's review

It’s nice that there is no otoshi (small appetizer) and you can enjoy freshly made gyoza (dumplings). The food arrived in about 7~8 minutes. Chinese food is great. (^_^) The combo of fried rice and gyoza is always a sure bet. The flavor suited my taste and was very good. An izakaya (Japanese pub) where you can eat at low prices is really helpful.

The "motsuni" made by slowly simmering motsu (offal) has a great reputation for being tasty and perfect as a snack with alcohol. It also comes with usuage (thin deep-fried tofu).

A rare find in Gunma Prefecture, one standout feature here is "Jaguchi Shochu All you can drink," where shochu comes right out of the tap. You can enjoy plenty of shochu with the 1-hour All you can drink option.

スミダルマ

Maybe it’s because this is Gunma, but the vegetables taste really good. It’s just like this: tasty, affordable, and comfortable. They also have jaguchi shochu (self-serve shochu from a tap), so it works whether you want to stop by for a quick drink or settle in for a long night of drinking. If you’re going to Maebashi, you should definitely check it out!

"Kushiyaki Noragorira" is an izakaya where you can enjoy kushiyaki (grilled skewers) slowly cooked over charcoal along with drinks. They offer a wide selection of Japanese sake and shochu.

The photo shows the hearty "French fries." They come out freshly fried and tasty, and they pair perfectly with drinks like beer.

The charcoal grilled skewers made with carefully selected Domestic ingredients are said to be crisp on the outside and juicy inside. If you are not sure what to order, the "Pork and Chicken Omakase 5 Skewer Platter" in the photo is a good pick.

You can also enjoy a wide range of other grilled skewers, including seafood and vegetables.

TAKAO's report

Draft beer, umeshu (plum wine), highballs, and more kept getting ordered one after another. The otsumami (snacks), starting with the potato salad and then skewer after skewer, were more than enough to satisfy everyone's hunger. The restaurant's signature tebasaki Kara-age (fried chicken wings) had that reliably good taste. Other tasty dishes kept coming too, including tonbyo (pea shoots) wrapped in meat.

テッシー2

The chilled sake, Fukunotomo, is a Japanese sake from Akita Prefecture, and it is hard to find. It had a smooth mouthfeel, was easy to drink, and tasted very good. For food, I ordered the 5-skewer Omakase. The 5-skewer Omakase included sunagimo (gizzard), seseri (neck meat), negima (chicken and scallion), tongue, and kashira (cheek meat). As you would expect from a kushi-yaki specialty restaurant, the meat was tender and very tasty.

Popular izakaya (Japanese pubs) in Isesaki, Gunma Prefecture

Sankai Shubo Akaneya

Sankai Shubo Akaneya is a popular izakaya where you can enjoy dishes made with fresh seafood and vegetables from Gunma Prefecture.

The interior has a calm Japanese modern feel and spans two floors, with a range of spaces including counter seats, Sunken kotatsu seating, and Private room options. The restaurant is located in Honmachi, Isesaki City, about a 15-minute walk from Isesaki Station.

Because the seafood is delivered fresh every day from Tokyo's wholesale market, it has outstanding freshness. The fish and shellfish on offer vary depending on what they can source, but reviews say the sashimi is fresh and delicious.

If you are not sure what to order, the "otsukuri assortment" is a good choice. You can order it from 1人前.

The "ika-geso tempura (squid tentacle tempura)" in the photo is a perfect dish to go with drinks.

They are also known for a good selection of Japanese sake to enjoy with the tasty snacks, and if you want to try sake from Gunma Prefecture, the "sanshu nomikurabe (three-sake tasting set)" is recommended because you can casually compare three local sakes from the area.

This is a meat maki (meat-wrapped skewer) dish with vegetables wrapped in meat and served on skewers, and you can enjoy a total of 5 kinds, including tomato and cheese.

They also offer skewers of Akagidori (Akagi chicken), a Gunma specialty, along with vegetable skewers and seafood skewers. You can take your time and enjoy the wide selection of skewers with a drink.

Because each skewer is carefully grilled over charcoal, the outside is crisp and fragrant, while the inside stays juicy enough to overflow with meat juices. The chicken thigh and negima (chicken and scallion skewer) were especially great, and the seasoning with salt was spot on. The grilling was perfect, and I could really tell how skilled the grill chef was. They also paired very well with alcohol, and they were so good I wanted to keep eating one after another. I will definitely be coming back.

It was a two story restaurant, and they showed us to a table seat. The dim lighting gave it a nice atmosphere, which was Surprising. We mainly ordered yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), and the liver stood out because it was cooked through but still delicious. The chicken wings were also very good. We nibbled on a few skewers with sparkling wine, then headed to the next place. It was a great meal!
