A soba restaurant established in the Meiji era, Kotobuki An has been serving guests for over 110 years. It is located along the Kurazukuri (warehouse-style) street, near the Ichiban-gai bus stop.

Kawagoe Matcha Soba, a specialty of Kotobuki An, features a unique blend of matcha green tea leaves grown in the former Kawagoe domain of western Saitama and buckwheat flour.
Their signature wanko soba is served in small individual bowls, each with matcha soba. The set comes with a variety of condiments and side dishes, with the number of toppings matching the number of soba portions. Enjoy a different combination of flavors as you try each bowl with a new condiment.

There is also "Tempura Soba," featuring soba noodles served in a warm broth and topped with tempura. The subtle aroma of matcha adds a pleasant accent to the dish.
While the restaurant can get busy during lunchtime, its calm and relaxed atmosphere makes it an excellent choice for a date.

The restaurant welcomes a diverse range of guests, from families and mature couples to young women and seniors. It's popular with people of all ages. Their signature dish is the five-tiered cha soba (matcha soba) platter, priced at around JPY 1,800, which comes with tempura, a raw quail egg, nori seaweed, and grated daikon with nameko mushrooms as toppings. While there is often a line due to its location in a popular tourist area, the inviting atmosphere and delicious soba make this restaurant highly recommended.

Wanko Soba
Served with nori seaweed, quail egg, grated yam, tempura (one shrimp and two pieces of pumpkin), and nameko mushrooms with grated daikon. Each topping is placed on the soba noodles and enjoyed with a savory sauce. The soba noodles themselves are a beautiful green color, offering a subtle tea aroma that sets them apart from regular soba. Among the toppings, the freshly fried tempura was especially delicious.

A specialty of Kanmi Sabo Kasuga is their "Imo Somen," a unique noodle made with about 30% local Kawagoe sweet potato. The noodles have a pleasantly chewy texture and a subtle sweet potato flavor that emerges as you eat.
The classic way to enjoy them is dipped in a chilled broth, but they are also served in a warm, minestrone-style tomato soup.

The "Kawagoe Yaki Dango," freshly grilled in front of the restaurant, is especially popular. You can choose between the savory soy sauce flavor or the "Nori Isobe," wrapped in seaweed.
The enticing aroma often draws people in, making these dango a perfect treat for strolling and snacking. If you're on a date, it's a fun idea to each try a different flavor and compare.

Ordered the Manpuku Set. Since sweet potatoes are a local specialty of Kawagoe, the somen noodles made with sweet potato starch were especially delicious. Somen is typically served hot, but during warmer seasons, it can also be served cold upon request. The grilled dango features two skewers, each with four rice dumplings, grilled with soy sauce for a wonderfully fragrant flavor.

I decided to pick up some freshly grilled dango being prepared right by the entrance. Since there wasn’t much of a line, I was able to buy them without waiting. Watching the dango being grilled over charcoal right in front of me was a real treat—I couldn’t help but stare. Ordered a Margherita pizza and a glass of white wine. The atmosphere is unpretentious—truly focused on the food. The chef, dedicated solely to his craft, has a certain coolness about him. Some might find him curt or unfriendly, but that's exactly how a chef should be. There is no excess—just pure, honest flavors from the ingredients themselves. And it is absolutely delicious. Ogakiku serves Kanto-style unagi, which is first steamed and then grilled. Their signature sauce, a closely guarded family recipe, has been passed down through seven generations since the restaurant's founding.
The tender eel is perfectly complemented by the sauce, which is flavorful without being overly sweet, allowing the natural taste of the unagi to shine.

Many guests enjoy pairing their drinks with light appetizers such as shirayaki (grilled eel without sauce), uzaku (vinegared eel and cucumber), and hone-sen (crispy eel bones) while they wait for their main unagi dish to be prepared.
The restaurant tends to get crowded, especially on weekends, so if you're planning a special date, making a reservation in advance is recommended, even though you may need to specify your arrival time.

When my wife asked, “What should we do for lunch?” we didn’t have any particular plans, but since the weather was nice, we decided to stroll around and try different foods together. We parked in a coin-operated lot and started our walk from there. To pace ourselves, we began with our usual favorite: melon bread.

The signature item at Kawagoe Bakery Rakuraku is their "Miso Bread," a true reflection of Kawagoe's unique character. This soft, chewy bread is made from a blend of Hokkaido wheat and rice flour, and kneaded with Chichibu miso from Saitama Prefecture. The delicate saltiness and subtle Japanese flavors are perfectly balanced. The fluffy texture of the bread pairs beautifully with the gentle aroma and savory depth of miso, offering a taste that embodies the spirit of Japanese tradition.

One of the most popular items is the "Tako Mayo Sen." Made to order, it features a chewy, okonomiyaki-style pancake sandwiched between crisp rice crackers.
Flavored with savory sauce and mayonnaise, it has a nostalgic taste reminiscent of classic Japanese snack shops. The large size is perfect for sharing between two people.

On certain days, you can watch a demonstration of traditional kinako-dama (roasted soybean flour candy) being made. Freshly prepared, warm, and soft candy is available to enjoy.
In the summer, they also offer "Nama Fruit Ame," fresh seasonal fruits coated in a thin layer of candy. This stylish treat is perfect for snacking while strolling around.

A wide variety of sweets are available for purchase. From freshly made kinako candy in the morning to salted candy and sweet potato treats, there are so many delicious options to choose from. The strawberry candy featured both strawberries and grapes. The candy coating had a delicate flavor—sweet but not overpowering, and truly delicious. Both the strawberries and grapes were exceptionally tasty, and serving them chilled made them even more enjoyable.

Takosen
A simple snack made by sandwiching okonomiyaki between crispy octopus rice crackers—but it's surprisingly delicious! When I asked my son what his favorite food was in Kawagoe, he immediately replied, "Takosen!" The sauce and mayonnaise are used sparingly, making it lighter than you might expect and easy to enjoy.

The shop displays signs for "Freshly Fried Imo Kenpi" and "Kawagoe Kenpi" at the entrance. We decided to try some. We bought the freshly fried Imo Kenpi with sweet potato syrup, served in a convenient take-out portion (JPY 300), and shared it between the two of us. It was delicious—still warm, nostalgic, simple, and pleasantly sweet. Truly satisfying.

Murasaki Imo Soft Serve
Its perfectly round shape is almost too cute to eat—but I couldn't resist! I enjoyed it before it melted. The flavor is creamy and just the right amount of sweetness, just as I expected—absolutely delicious. It comes with a single piece of crispy sweet potato stick, which was a pleasant surprise. When I tried it, I was amazed by how tasty it was!

The specialty here is the "Imo Koi," a steamed sweet that is prepared right at the front of the restaurant. Many customers are drawn in by the inviting aroma and billowing steam, making it hard to resist purchasing one.
Inside the chewy dough, you'll find a slice of sweet potato and chunky red bean paste. The moist texture of the potato combined with the gentle sweetness creates a delightful flavor.

They also offer "warabi mochi," freshly made in-store every morning. It is said to be exceptionally soft, with a delicate, melt-in-your-mouth texture.
It's available in small portions perfect for snacking on the go, or in larger sizes ideal for sharing on a date.

How many years has it been since I last visited Kashiya Yokocho? The scenery has changed so much from what I remember, but the sense of excitement remains the same. On this crisp late autumn day, who could resist the fragrant steam rising from the steamer under the clear blue sky? I bought 'Imo Koi', their sweet potato manju. The chewy outer layer and mildly sweet potato filling let me fully savor the flavor of sweet potato.

As you stroll through the traditional Kashiya Yokocho in Koedo, you'll come across Kasho Umon, famous for its "Imo Koi" sweets. I spotted my favorite warabi mochi sold in a small boat-shaped tray, typically used for takoyaki, making it perfect for enjoying while walking. The soft, jelly-like warabi mochi is coated with delicious kinako (roasted soybean flour). It's an ideal treat for eating on the go and was absolutely delightful.

Inside the pie is a sweet potato filling bursting with syrupy sweetness. This treat features a croissant pastry filled with sweet potato paste. I enjoyed it fresh from the oven—the outer pastry was perfectly crisp, while the filling was piping hot with a juicy sweetness. It was absolutely delicious. Most croissant-based sweets like this don’t usually exceed expectations, but this one truly did. The aroma of butter was also delightful.

I often saw people carrying these cups and wondered where they were from. While strolling through Kashiya Yokocho, I finally found the shop and decided to stop in. I ordered the most popular item, the Soda Lemonade. On this particularly hot day, the refreshing fizz and perfectly balanced sweet and tart flavors really hit the spot!

Taking a sip of the Soda Lemonade, you’ll notice a pleasant sweetness. In contrast, the Super Lemon Lemonade delivers a much tangier kick. My husband tried them in reverse order and preferred the sweeter taste. Both are tart, but not overpoweringly so, with a rich lemon flavor that stands out. Perfect for a refreshing pick-me-up on a hot summer day.
