下賀茂の吉泉で食事をした後、修学院離宮を訪れた。後水尾上皇によって造営された山荘だが、上、中、下離宮と広大なもので起伏に富んでおり、8万㎡に及ぶ水田を付属農地とするもので、とても見事な回遊式庭園である。此処も桂離宮と同じく、係員に引率され説明を受ながら、一時間程歩くのだが炎天下で些か疲れた。真夏は少し酷である。
その後、東山駅に近い白川沿いの一棟貸しの宿屋に泊まった。食事の提供は無しである。昼にご馳走を食べたので夜は軽めということで、少し宿で休息を取った後、白川沿いを北上し東山駅を少し北に入ったこの店で蕎麦を食べた。
蕎麦屋なのにどうも事前予約のみ受け付けている様で、相当な人気店なのか何か特段の事情があるのかと訝しんでいたが、故に予約をしていた。
さて、店の入口は京都らしい落ち着いたもので、夜だということもあるが、少し仄暗い感じで中々良いのだが、店内はどうも落ち着かない構造である。入口付近はテーブル席だが、奥は全て上がり座敷で情緒もない。予約のみということなので客でいっぱいなのかと思いきや入口のテーブル席に数人が居たのみである。上がり座敷は誰もいなかったので、其処に上がり奥のカウンター形式になった場所に細君と並んで腰かけた。
頼んだのは、自分は鴨せいろの大盛り。普通盛りの量はどうかと聞くと、少し少ないかも知れませんと仰せなのでそうした。細君はにしんそば。細君は鴨肉は好きだが葱が駄目なので、久し振りににしんそばにしようと言って選んだ。
蕎麦の印象は何だか予約しか受け付けない様なことであったこともあり、かなりの有名店かと思いきや、極、普通である。街中の普通の蕎麦屋という他に形容が見つからぬ。細君も同じ様な印象であった様だ。
暑い盛りで、蕎麦の香気を求める訳にも季節柄難しいのだろうが、些か期待はずれであった。店を後にして白川沿いにのんびりと歩いて宿に戻った。白川をここまでゆっくりと見たのは初めてである。宿の二階からもその穏やかな流れが見える。とても良い。
