On October 29 (KST), transfer market expert Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany reported via social media that Freiburg’s standout winger Ritsu Doan is attracting interest from multiple top clubs across Europe. Plettenberg noted, "If a strong offer arrives, a winter transfer is possible. By next summer, Doan will be ready for a career leap. Inquiries have already been made."
Born in 1998, Doan began his professional journey with Gamba Osaka before moving to Europe on loan to FC Groningen in 2017. He thrived in his first European stint, securing a permanent move to Groningen, and later catching the attention of Dutch powerhouse PSV Eindhoven. Although he struggled initially to secure a starting role, a loan to Arminia Bielefeld in the Bundesliga allowed him to refine his skills. Upon returning to PSV, Doan’s scoring ability shone, leading to his transfer to SC Freiburg for the 2022-2023 season.
In Germany, Doan quickly became a pivotal figure for Freiburg and played a crucial role in Japan's advance to the Round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. His impressive development led to increased competition within Freiburg’s squad, ultimately pushing South Korean international Jung Woo-young to seek more playing time with a move to VfB Stuttgart.
This season, Doan has reached new heights, recording 9 goals and 7 assists across all competitions. In his current Bundesliga campaign, he has scored 4 goals and provided 1 assist in 8 matches, solidifying his reputation as one of Freiburg’s leading players. Known for his role as a right winger or secondary striker, Doan combines strong shooting ability, speed, and low center of gravity, making him a challenging player to dispossess and a reliable finisher.
Doan’s market value presents an attractive prospect. Plettenberg estimates that Freiburg aims for an asking price around €20 million (approximately 30 billion KRW), though a more realistic transfer fee might be around €15 million (approximately 22.5 billion KRW), with Doan contracted until June 2027.
If Doan continues his upward trajectory, a move to one of the Bundesliga's elite clubs, such as Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, or RB Leipzig, could be on the horizon. While Japanese players have shown strong performances in Europe, few have broken into top-tier clubs with lasting success. Recent examples include Takumi Minamino, who faced challenges at Liverpool, and Wataru Endo, whose playing time at Liverpool diminished following the arrival of manager Arne Slot.
All eyes are on Doan to see if he can become Japan’s next big player in European football.
