Ageha Grand Front Osaka

Located about a 2-minute walk from Osaka Station, Ageha is situated on the 7th floor of the Grand Front Osaka South Building.

Inside, you'll find a modern interior with a display of wines. The restaurant offers around 30 seats between the counter and tables, as well as private rooms.

This restaurant specializes in kushiage—deep-fried skewers—which can be enjoyed à la carte or as part of a set course.

With a wide selection of drinks, it is also ideal for use as an izakaya. The owner is a certified sommelier and can recommend wines that pair perfectly with kushiage. Complimentary refills of cabbage and vegetable sticks are also available.

If you choose the "Omakase" course, freshly fried skewers will be served one after another until you say stop. Each skewer is lightly and crisply fried, making them easy to enjoy without feeling greasy, so you can indulge in as many as you like.

There are four types of seasonings available, including sauce, salt, and dashi soy sauce.

スリーパット

With the omakase option, skewers are served one after another until you say stop. The course begins with shiso-wrapped shrimp and Wagyu kushiage. Both are exceptionally delicious and pair perfectly with beer. I thought the chef might have chosen their signature skewers to start, but every skewer that followed was just as impressive.

お隆さん。

You can easily pop these skewers into your mouth—they’re not greasy at all and taste even better than expected. The most memorable impression is how light and fluffy they are. "Light" might actually be the best way to describe them. After enjoying a draft beer, I moved on to wine and chose a Japanese wine. This turned out to be an excellent choice: delicious and surprisingly affordable. As expected from a restaurant owned by a certified sommelier, the wine selection pairs perfectly with kushiage.

Located about a 2-minute walk from JR Osaka Station, Maru is situated within Shin-Umeda Shokudo-gai.

The restaurant features a cozy, casual atmosphere that reflects the traditional spirit of Osaka. With only counter seating, it offers an intimate dining experience. Maru is ideal for a quick drink or a small gathering with friends.

This izakaya serves oden all year round.

The broth is Kanto-style, featuring a pronounced soy sauce flavor. It pairs perfectly with drinks. The oden pieces are cut in half for easy eating, and the skewers are removed before serving for your convenience.

Maru offers an impressive selection of 20 to 30 different oden ingredients.

The Japanese radish is especially popular for its rich, savory flavor. The "sujiniku" (beef tendon) is tender and full of deep umami, while the bamboo shoots add a pleasant, satisfying crunch.

S.Y Nのグルメ日記

We ordered classic oden items like Japanese radish and thick fried tofu, as well as unique options such as stuffed cabbage rolls. Each ingredient was thoroughly infused with savory Japanese dashi, releasing a burst of flavor with every bite. The oden paired perfectly with beer. Maru is an ideal spot for enjoying a light drink, and I look forward to visiting again.

Ryo521

I tried several types of oden, including Japanese radish, egg, ganmo, atsuage, and umeyaki. Each ingredient was thoroughly infused with flavor and absolutely delicious. Since I visited in February during the cold season, the oden was especially warming. The Japanese radish was simmered until very tender, just the way I like it. It was my first time trying umeyaki, and it offered a unique and intriguing texture.

Sakanaya Stand Fujiko

Located on the second basement floor of Lucua, directly connected to Osaka and Umeda Stations, this restaurant is a popular spot that often draws lines during meal times.

With around 76 seats available including both tables and the counter, it is an inviting place for both solo diners and groups.

This lively izakaya is known for its playful slogans, such as "A place where seafood is just cheap." Guests can enjoy Japanese sake and fresh sashimi at excellent prices.

The set meals, labeled with the phrase "Fisherman's rock-bottom prices," are both affordable and generously varied. These dishes are also perfect as snacks for daytime drinks.

This restaurant offers a wide variety of dishes, from fresh seafood to fried favorites.

One of the most popular items is the "Dashi-maki" (Japanese rolled omelet), carefully prepared by a skilled chef. Served hot and fluffy, it is infused with flavorful dashi broth, making it exceptionally delicious. The generous portion size also makes it perfect for sharing.

やまでら

"Celeb no Konkatsu" (Celebrity Konjac Cutlet)

The name alone is quite intriguing! I couldn't resist trying it, and it turned out to be a breaded and fried konjac cutlet—definitely a healthy option. The "celebrity" part likely comes from the addition of uni (sea urchin) sauce and truffle salt. The combination with the uni sauce was excellent, making it a truly enjoyable dish to pair with drinks.

サラリーマンの昼飯

Sashimi arrived as well. Even without a refined palate, I could tell how fresh it was. Next up was the stewed Japanese radish with beef tendon—what a generous serving! The flavor had soaked all the way through, making it incredibly delicious. Halfway through, I switched to Japanese sake. Dassai for just JPY 380? It almost seems too good to be true. The abalone sushi was pleasantly crunchy and tasty, while the eel sushi had just the right hint of Japanese pepper for a perfect finish.

Osaka Ichi Torihei Honten

Founded in 1952, Osaka Ichi Torihei is a long-established yakitori restaurant located in the Shin-Umeda Shokudo-gai, just a 3-minute walk from the Midosuji Exit of Osaka Station.

The restaurant offers about 15 counter seats only. Thanks to the quick service, waiting times are generally short.

This izakaya specializes in authentic yakitori grilled over binchotan charcoal. Their signature sauce, praised for its exceptional flavor, has been carefully maintained and enriched since the restaurant first opened.

The starter—skewered duck—is especially popular. The meat and skin are served separately, allowing you to savor the distinct flavors of each. The slightly sweet sauce pairs perfectly with the duck.

You can order yakitori à la carte, but for a more satisfying meal, we recommend the Omakase Course. Each skewer is petite, allowing you to sample a wide variety of flavors.

The photo shows "Bonjiri," or chicken tail, served under the unique name "Neo Ponpon." Here, you can even compare the flavors of male and female chicken.

The liver is served rare and melts in your mouth, while the minced meat pairs so perfectly with green peppers that it's almost surprising. My personal favorite is the Don Don skewer. Heart! That incredible texture—it's just unforgettable. It's truly a miraculous skewer that leaves you sighing in delight. The sauce is simply outstanding, as if it's telling you to keep eating more. And you won't be able to stop drinking beer with it.

Izakaya Gataro offers an extensive menu, featuring everything from grilled and fried dishes to fresh vegetables, allowing guests to enjoy a wide variety of Japanese cuisine.

One of their specialties is the Tomato Salad, which consists of ripe, whole tomatoes sliced and layered with fresh onion. Both the quality of the ingredients and the plum dressing are highly praised.

Enjoy authentic kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) served with fresh cabbage on the side. If you’re unsure what to order, the assorted platters—available in sets of 5 or 8 skewers—are highly recommended.

The batter is made with meringue, resulting in a light and crispy texture. Each skewer is perfectly fried for a delicious finish. In addition to the house sauce, curry powder and salt are also provided for extra flavor.

ろってぃ

The eight-skewer set is priced at just JPY 1,000. Unbelievable! Is this really only a thousand yen? The set includes salmon, scallop, outside skirt, pork, shrimp, shiitake mushroom, lotus root, and asparagus wrapped in bacon. My companion noticed that after frying, the staff carefully wiped the oil off each skewer by hand. Great value, delicious food, and outstanding service—Osaka truly impresses.

The "Kuroyaki" grilled new onion is a simple dish: just charcoal-grilled onion served with a sprinkle of salt. Yet, each bite is incredibly juicy, with flavorful juices dripping from the onion—truly delicious! The prosciutto-wrapped onions are topped with balsamic sauce, which is an unusual but delightful combination. Even more surprising, the fruit is blueberries.

Recommended izakaya near Higashi-Umeda Station

Sakaba Yamato

Located about a 3-minute walk from Higashi-Umeda Station, Sakaba Yamato is situated on the second basement floor of the Osaka Fukoku Seimei Building.

The restaurant features a U-shaped counter with approximately 43 seats. It is common to see lines forming before opening, and even on weekdays at lunchtime, the restaurant is often fully occupied.

This popular izakaya is known for serving delicious dishes at reasonable prices.

One of the highlights is the fresh live kuruma ebi (Japanese tiger prawns), kept in a tank on the premises. The raw "odori" style offers a firm, springy texture and a natural sweetness. The prawn heads are grilled with salt, providing a contrasting texture and flavor.

The signature menu item, Akashiyaki, is known for its light and fluffy texture. It melts in your mouth with every bite.

Enjoy it by dipping each piece into a separate bowl of gently flavored, clear dashi broth. Since Akashiyaki takes time to prepare, it is recommended to order early.

n.keiko16525

The live kuruma prawn sashimi is, of course, superb, but the fried prawns served alongside are simply outstanding—crispy, perfectly seasoned with salt, and the prawn miso is exceptional. Even licking your fingers is a delight—absolutely fantastic. The sushi is topped with thick slices of my favorite ingredients, making each bite a joy. Pure happiness. The Akashiyaki is served piping hot, with a rich, flavorful dashi broth—just perfect. I finished my meal by drinking every last drop of the soup.

"Hai-boshi" refers to a traditional drying method that uses volcanic ash. The ash helps remove any fishy odor and locks in the natural umami flavors of the fish.

The pictured "Saba Hai-boshi" (mackerel dried in volcanic ash) is known for its rich, slightly sweet flavor. It is perfectly grilled, resulting in tender, moist, and fluffy flesh.

tomikaai

Every piece is impressively large—sure to lift your spirits! Each one is perfectly grilled with a crisp exterior, while the inside remains moist, fluffy, and tender. Excellent grilling technique! Every variety offers its own unique aroma and rich flavor, making it hard to choose a favorite. However, the standout for me is the salmon belly. The fattiness is absolutely outstanding—by far the best salmon belly I have ever tasted!

Aki7878

Since dried fish is the specialty here, I ordered some right away. I enjoyed the mirin-marinated dried Pacific saury and dried horse mackerel. I also tried the chilled tofu topped with ume and shirasu, along with some edamame. The horse mackerel was especially plump and tender. The mirin-marinated dried fish offered just the right touch of sweetness—perfect with sake, but it also made me crave a bowl of white rice.

The oden at Gotetsu is highly praised for its flavorful dashi broth. The light base allows the natural umami of the ingredients to infuse the soup, creating a delicious and well-balanced taste.

For the perfect way to finish your meal, try the "Oden Dashi Kamo Nan Nyumen." This specialty features thin wheat noodles in a rich dashi broth enhanced with the savory flavor of duck, resulting in an exceptional dish.

The oden broth here is simply exceptional—far richer and more flavorful than anything you’ll find at a convenience store. It’s a reminder of just how important a good dashi is. In addition to the outstanding oden, Gotetsu offers expertly grilled yakitori and beautifully presented sashimi. Every dish is prepared to the highest standards, truly befitting the prestigious Shinchi district.

Both the grilled chicken and beef dishes are excellent. The sashimi selection includes both fish and chicken, with the fresh chicken sashimi being a standout. The restaurant also offers an impressive variety of high-quality Japanese sake. I must admit, I drank a bit too much that night! To finish off, the somen noodles served in a rich oden broth with duck were truly outstanding.

Yuasa Ko

Yuasa Ko is an izakaya specializing in local fish from Wakayama. Conveniently located on the basement level of a building just a one-minute walk from Kitashinchi Station.

The interior is simple and unpretentious, and fresh fish are sometimes available for purchase. The restaurant offers approximately 28 seats with both counter and table seating.

Seafood is delivered fresh every morning from the coastal waters near Yuasa in Wakayama. Renowned for its exceptional freshness, Yuasa Ko has earned a solid reputation among seafood enthusiasts.

The assorted sashimi platter features selections that change daily based on the morning's catch. The soy sauce served here is especially flavorful and enhances the taste of the fresh fish.

The photo shows "Ashiaka Ebi" (red-footed shrimp) kara-age, served as a set of two.

The shrimp are carefully deep-fried so that you can eat them whole, including the head. Enjoy their crispy texture, seasoned simply with lemon and salt and pepper.

Sazae (Turban shell) Sashimi
The shell is about the size of a fist, with impressive barnacles attached—how many years must it have taken to grow this large? Truly remarkable. The meat is even firmer than abalone, full of flavor and delicious. An outstanding taste! The curled innards are also surprisingly mild in bitterness and very enjoyable. Perhaps it's because of their excellent diet? Whatever the reason, it's simply delicious.

As you mentioned, the fish here is exceptionally fresh. Saba (mackerel) sashimi, which can only be enjoyed when truly fresh, is especially recommended. Dip it in wasabi soy sauce—the mackerel is incredibly sweet and flavorful. I also tried kinmedai (golden eye snapper) sashimi for the first time, and it was just as sweet and delicious. After the seafood hot pot, I finished the meal with zosui rice porridge. This zosui was outstanding—the perfect final bite to a memorable meal.

Dontaku

Dontaku is an izakaya specializing in Kyushu cuisine, located on the basement level of Osaka Ekimae Building No.2, just a one-minute walk from Kitashinchi Station.

With only about 15 counter seats, the restaurant offers an intimate and cozy atmosphere. Reservations are available in the evening.

By day, Dontaku operates as a specialist Champon noodle shop, while at night it transforms into an izakaya featuring Hakata-style grilled skewers.

In the evening, guests are served "Negi Bara" skewers as an appetizer. The combination of pork belly and green onions is especially delicious, and it pairs well with a sprinkle of shichimi spice. The accompanying cabbage is said to be naturally sweet.

You can enjoy Kyushu specialties here, including basashi (horse sashimi) made with fresh horse meat directly sourced from Kumamoto. The meat is known for its firm texture and delicious flavor. Each serving comes with white fat from the mane area, sliced green onions, and ginger as condiments. It is highly recommended to pair this dish with shochu.

森田パン

Unlike the coiled Hakata-style, the kawa (chicken skin) skewers here are prepared in the standard grilled style. The skewers are generously sized, can be ordered individually, and are quite filling. The highlight, basashi (horse sashimi), comes in a substantial portion for the price, with a pleasantly firm texture and excellent flavor. Pairing basashi with a hot Imo Shochu is the perfect way to enjoy a winter evening.

The meal began with a potato salad appetizer, featuring sausages inside and a rich, tangy mayonnaise flavor. Next came their signature dish, Negi Bara. The juicy, flavorful pork belly is perfectly complemented by the green onions, while the side of sweet cabbage adds an extra touch of freshness.
