At lunchtime, you can enjoy Saikyo-yaki (Kyoto-style miso-marinated grilled fish) served as a set meal.
Each set includes your choice of main dish, four kinds of small side dishes, rice that pairs perfectly with the Saikyo-yaki, and miso soup. Pictured is the "Grilled Black Cod Saikyo-yaki Set Meal." The black cod is expertly grilled to achieve a tender, flavorful texture.

This is an excellent place to enjoy a quick set meal. Located between sections of the food market, it can be a bit hard to find, making it a hidden spot known mostly to regulars or those who stumble upon it by chance. The food is outstanding—the fish, side dishes, steamed rice, and red miso soup are all exceptionally delicious.

Saikyo Yaki Black Cod Set Meal
The black cod is perfectly cooked—tender and full of rich flavor, beautifully complemented by the Saikyo miso marinade. It pairs wonderfully with rice, making every bite irresistible. This is one of my favorite tastes. Personally, I was especially impressed by the nanbanzuke (marinated vegetables and fish) served as a side dish—it was so delicious I wished it could be the star of its own set meal. Every bite was deeply satisfying; truly exceptional.

Whenever I'm craving something delicious, I always come here. For lunch that day, I enjoyed a vegetable kakiage rice bowl and white miso noodle soup. As a fan of white miso, I found the flavors absolutely delightful. The rice bowl is especially tasty with a dash of fragrant sansho oil or sansho soy sauce. It's wonderful to experience the flavors of Wakuden in such a casual setting. I can't wait to visit again soon.

Although we chose the most affordable course, both the vegetables and meat portions were generous and everything was delicious. The course included both chicken and beef, which made it feel like a great value. In addition to the main dishes, we enjoyed rice, pickles, yuba (tofu skin), grated yam, and more. The course also came with a complimentary drink, which was much appreciated. Overall, it felt like an excellent deal and I was thoroughly satisfied.

I tried the charcoal-grilled chicken and beef tongue with grated yam set. Everything was delicious! The chicken was excellent, and the beef tongue was thick, flavorful, and very tasty. Instead of a salad, the accompanying vegetables were lightly pickled, making them easy to enjoy. For the chicken and grated yam set, you can choose between salt or sauce. I opted for salt for both, and they were both outstanding.

The most memorable dish I had during my trip to Kyoto was the fluffy yuba rice bowl here. Delicate yuba, a savory ankake sauce, and a cloud-like egg enriched with dashi sit atop a bed of multigrain rice. I’m glad I discovered this on the last day of my trip—otherwise, I might have eaten it for every meal.

I wanted my mother-in-law to enjoy a delicious meal, so I searched online and found a Japanese restaurant in Shijo Teramachi. I decided on the seafood rice bowl, and every ingredient—even the marinated mackerel and seaweed—was refined and flavorful. The red miso soup was especially comforting.
