Chitose Honten

Chitose Honten is a renowned spot for "Nikusui," a signature Osaka specialty. Loved by both locals and visitors, it often draws long lines of customers.

The interior features table seating and evokes the nostalgic charm of a traditional Showa-era diner.

"Nikusui" is a local specialty consisting of beef udon without the noodles. It features a flavorful broth made with bonito and is generously topped with tender slices of beef.

The "Nikusui with Tofu" includes silky tofu, which pairs perfectly with the savory broth, making this a comforting and warming dish.

Many diners order "Nikusui" together with a bowl of rice topped with raw egg (Tamago Kake Gohan). There are many ways to enjoy this popular combination, such as placing the meat on top of the rice or pouring broth over it for an ochazuke-style dish.

Discover your own favorite way to savor this classic meal.

I visited Chitose Honten for lunch, eager to try their famous Nikusui (beef soup), which I had always wanted to taste. I arrived at 11:30 am and found about 50 people already in line. After waiting for over an hour, I was finally seated. Although the beef udon was tempting, I purchased tickets for the Nikusui and a small Tamago Gohan (rice with raw egg) from the vending machine. Within a few minutes, the Nikusui was brought to my table. The beef was tender and easy to enjoy.

Enjoy a lunchtime experience at an udon restaurant in Namba, Osaka—though I didn't actually order udon. This was my first visit to Chitose Honten, a well-known destination for their signature "Nikusui." For those unfamiliar, "Nikusui" is a beef udon without the noodles, and this legendary shop is credited as its birthplace.

Meiji Ken

Meiji Ken is a long-established Western-style restaurant loved by both locals and visitors.

The interior offers a calm and nostalgic atmosphere typical of the Showa era, when this shop was founded.

While lines can form during busy times, the large number of seats and quick turnover mean you can usually be seated without a long wait.

This restaurant is renowned for its signature dish: Osaka-style Omurice.

The ketchup rice, a key component of the dish, is infused with a Western-style broth and mixed with finely chopped onions and minced beef, resulting in a rich, savory flavor.

The "3 Skewer Kushi Katsu Set" is a popular menu item that lets you enjoy both Omurice and Osaka's famous kushi katsu skewers together. It's a favorite choice among many guests.

The kushi katsu features a sweet sauce that soaks into the crispy coating, and the meat is especially tender. There's also a "5 Skewer Kushi Katsu Set" for those who want to enjoy even more kushikatsu.

I recently visited for lunch after a long time. For decades, this restaurant has always had a line at lunchtime, but thanks to the quick turnover, you never have to wait long—just like in the old days. The set of omurice with three skewered cutlets is as delicious as ever—truly unbeatable!

Omurice
Meiji Ken’s omurice features a classic wrapped omelet style, but the inside surprises with risotto instead of the usual ketchup rice. While you won’t find visible ingredients, the rich umami flavor is deeply concentrated—an absolute delight. The dish is finished with a refreshing house-made sauce that has a hint of tanginess, perfectly complementing the flavors.

The popular "Ojiya Udon" is served in a square iron hot pot.

Located between Honmachi Station and Shinsaibashi Station on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, Usami Tei Matsubaya is always bustling with customers. While many people order the signature Ojiya Udon, I opted for the lighter Kitsune Udon. A generous piece of deep-fried tofu sits atop the slightly smaller bowl, making a striking impression. The dashi broth is on the sweeter side. I thoroughly enjoyed the authentic flavors of Osaka right down to the last bite.

The lively, retro-style interior captures the atmosphere of the Showa era, and it’s not uncommon to share a table with other guests. The nostalgic ambiance of a traditional Japanese diner is part of its enduring charm.

The restaurant’s signature dish, the "Signature Curry," makes a striking impression from the moment it arrives at your table. With just one bite, you’ll experience a bold, spicy flavor with remarkable depth.

Specialty Curry
The curry is spicier than expected, but mixing in the egg creates a wonderfully balanced, mellow flavor. The beef is well-seasoned and delicious, and finding pieces of it in the curry is a delightful surprise. Hanshin Meibutsu Ikayaki

Hanshin Meibutsu Ikayaki specializes in "Ikayaki," a beloved Osaka specialty. As a signature offering of Hanshin Department Store, it has been cherished by both locals and visitors for many years.

Located inside the Snack Park at Hanshin Umeda, you can enjoy freshly made Ikayaki on the spot or take some home as a popular souvenir.

Ikayaki is a classic Osaka specialty made by quickly grilling a mixture of secret dashi broth, flour, and fresh squid tentacles.

The simple, chewy batter is perfectly complemented by the tender, springy texture of the squid.

The "Deraban" is a fluffy grilled ikayaki (grilled squid pancake) made with egg.

Adding egg gives it a satisfying, hearty texture.

Other variations, such as the "Wafu Dera" (Japanese-style Deraban) and "Negi Ikayaki" (with green onions), are also available, allowing you to choose your favorite flavor from a wide selection.

Ikayaki (Grilled Squid)

A simple snack that somehow feels like a luxury treat—there’s something special about ikayaki. There’s always a line, but service is fast, so if there are fewer than 20 people ahead, it’s worth waiting. This long-standing favorite continues to attract crowds year after year. Hanshin Snack Park truly offers delicious food at every corner.

Ikayaki

I ordered the "Ikayaki," but there are also other options such as the egg-based "Deraban," the Japanese-style "Wafu Dera" Deraban with extra green onions, and the "Negi Ikayaki," which adds green onions to the classic. The "Ikayaki" is consistently delicious, allowing you to fully enjoy the flavor of the squid. It's perfect for a quick bite when you're a little hungry.

Its delicate flavor makes it a perfect gift for older family members, so I decided on this one. I hope my mother-in-law will be pleased. I'm glad I found such a wonderful souvenir!

No matter how many times I buy them, they're always delicious. I often purchase these as souvenirs, and while there is usually a line, the process moves smoothly thanks to the four registers.

The pork buns feature a soft, slightly sweet dough filled with juicy, flavorful pork—an exceptional combination. The shrimp shumai are generously packed with shrimp and so delicious that twelve pieces weren’t enough—I couldn’t resist buying another pack.
