Soba and udon, a local cuisine restaurant, Washokuya Aizen. The local dishes include houtou and yaiton. Houtou features pumpkin, mushrooms, and duck.
I sat at a table around the irori (traditional hearth) and ordered some side dishes along with chilled sake. The place was quite empty, with only a few other customers, but it seemed like a group was having a banquet in one of the private rooms.
The appetizer was a simmered dish of Japanese radish, carrot, and deep-fried tofu. Since it was close to closing time, I only ordered the red meat horse sashimi and squid sashimi, along with chilled sake, and soon it was last call.
The red meat horse sashimi came with grated garlic, ginger, and finely chopped green onions as condiments. The chilled sake was served in a glass tokkuri (sake pitcher) with an ice pocket, keeping the sake cool. Although I couldn't choose the brand of sake, it turned out to be to my liking, and when I asked on my way out, I learned it was "Kanchiku" from Tozuka Brewery in Saku City. There were no seating fees or appetizer charges; I only paid for what I ordered. Inside the restaurant, there was a massive piece of natural wood, which was said to be a yew partition.
